Long Awaited First Start! (link to video)

Whether or not it's a daily driver depends on two things. How hard it is to start, and how long it stays together... Thanks for the heads up on the DB4. I've been looking into that. Good to know that someone has actually done it now.

For right now, I'm running a stock IP turned all the way up. Gonna run it that way for break in, then when I've got the coin, upgrade to something bigger. MUCH bigger. Yes, that's correct about the braided lines. It's a pan-e-vac kit you'd normally find on a gasser with headers.

The timing is way too advanced I think, but we'll see. Yes it was a (expletive deleted) to start. Had to use a nip of ether. Don't worry, not running glow plugs so it's safe. It is REALLY loud. Just sitting there running and revving it a few times, the turbo doesn't even begin to spool...

Long Awaited First Start! (link to video)

FINALLY! After almost two years working on it, my '89 7.3 turbo engine is running. Still a ways to go before it's ready to drive, but at least I've reached a major milestone. Thanks to everyone here for the support/advice/suggestions. It's finally bearing fruit...

I'm going to compare the resistance of the intake heater vs the 8 glow plugs. If they are close enough I might try to use the GP controller for it. The heater will go into the hole on the back of the manifold where the CDR used to go. I got rid of the CDR to use the valley pan hole for the...

Actually, the intake heater on a powerstroke is only active below freezing during extended idle periods to prevent white smoke. It's only there for emissions. Nothing to do with starting. I'm getting rid of the glowplugs because I don't want the tips melting off and doing damage anywhere else.

For cold weather starting, I'm using a powerstroke intake heater. Worst case, I'll point a heat gun at the air filter. Used to do that on an old 4 cylinder Deere with no installed heater whatsoever. It would turn over twice and fire right up that way, but you could forget it without the...

C-rings do have to be machined into the deck of the block. The machine shop had to make a tool just for this. It was done on the boring machine after finish honing each cylinder, that way the groove was perfectly centered around the bore. The Hypermax folks told me this is the same setup used...

@Darrin... I was being tongue in cheek as well. Thanks for the complements! I agree about the hole in the hood. It'd be nice, but don't want it exposed to the elements. I work near the sea, so I want as little saltwater as possible going under there. Yes, paint is in the works too. I...

    Which front suspension is better?

Did kingpins in my '77 F-250 when I was 16. I quite agree. Never again. That is all.

The header flanges were like $125. Both up pipes have two band clamps on them with about 1/4" of clearance at each butt joint to allow for expansion.

I'll never let anyone drive my truck

I don't let ANYONE drive my truck with one exception... My girlfriend. In turn, I'm the only one who is allowed to drive her truck (a 450 hp '99 powerstroke). It's her pride and joy, and she did all the work herself. She is the only person I trust to drive mine, and know when something is...

Worried? No. I'm EXPECTING it! This is going to be a sled puller that *can* be daily driven. With the RPMs I'm going to run, I don't think it will be too big of an issue though. I did all the math for a target of 4000-4500 rpm and then dug through compressor maps. This is what I came up...

I made the manifolds and up pipes with mandrel bends. I cut and fabricated as I went. The flanges are from Stan's Headers. Took me about two days work to finish it. I used 1 7/8" u-bends for the exhaust ports, and 2 1/2" for the logs/up pipes. A drill press with holesaws was used to...
