Which ATF do I use ?

1994 E-350 w/7.3 and E40D

Pep Boys and AutoZone say use: only Mercon 5 or something bad will happen.

I ran into a guy I know who does only performance automatic transmission work and he said: do not use Mercon 5 or something bad will happen. His claim was: use only ATF. And he gave me a case of NAPA "Premium Performance ATF".

Now the both of them Cannot be right - so what say you all? <g>

You can use either Mercon or Mercon V. Mercon V is the upgraded fluid that has replaced Mercon.

Nothing bad will happen with the new fluid or the old fluid. Both are rated for your tranny.

Yes mercon V is the upgraded fluid but the shop that does my transmissions quit using mercon V because of the friction modifiers in it. Your standard mercon ATF will work the best

I bought 20 quarts of that, 17 in the trans and 3 in the transfer case. At $5.29/quart, it wasn't cheap! Though it works great. Keeps the truck shifting awesome.

I use Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc. No complaints!!!!!!!
