Hey guys im posting this info for a very good friend of mine. They don't have internet so they can't get onto this wonderful website lol. He has a 1988 F250 4x4 7.3 C6 combo. His dad gave him a 7.3 2wd zf5 with 10k on a overhaul from his 1990 F450. He would like to make the zf a 4wd to mate to the transfer off his C6. Is this doable? Does he just need a different tail housing, or a different housing and output shaft. He is a fantastic mechanic so tearing it apart is doable. Thank you all for any and all help.

The 2wd F450 ZF should have a driveline e-brake on the back of what we think of as a 4wd tranny, he should be able to remove the e-brake and bolt on the transfer case as far as I know.

You dont have to change the output shaft to make a 2wd ZF5 into a 4wd version?

This is the best news I have heard in a long time if its true.

the 2wd F450 uses a 4wd ZF5. the only difference is instead of a transfer case, it has a parking brake bolted to it's ass.

nope to do that it is a complete teardown to change 2x4 to 4x4, much more than a tail housing change.

the F450 is the only exception like noted

Excellent, then I can add looking for a F450 ZF to the list when I am looking for a 4x4 ZF. Any particulr years of the F450 that work or dont work?
