This is terrible, but I just don't pay much attention to what the engine speed is, I can't remember what it is at 65-70 :dunno I just remember it drops near 500 rpm slipping it into OD . If memory serves me ( don't count on it, I can't get any dang service around here :rotflmao loaded mileage is now up to 13.1 and that's pulling heavy and steady in 4 over on a nice flat run to TX

That's not bad, not bad at all. That's better than even some electronic jobs. I guess that's what it takes to make an IDI do it; a ton of gears.LOL

Why not bolt an IDI to a 6 or 7 speed OD with an aux OD unit on board as well... ....if you ain;t in the right gear with THAT setup, then you should just go drive a prius!

Lots of gears makes any vehicle nice to drive, weither it has 175hp or 1000hp. Just lets you keep the engine in the sweet spot, good fuel economy, and not loosing as much speed on the hills.

I agree. If I ever get into hauling, I think I would find a dually 2wd...and throw a brownie in there. Thats what I'm thinking ;Sweet

Yeah, but a 175hp IDI with 15 speeds sounds exhausting. The old school truckers, man, I don't see how they kept their sanity.

Even with a turbo, still sounds like driving a Detroit.

Probably. And none of that air shift stuff, those twin and triple sticks look confusing, you gotta give props to someone who knows how to drive one ;Sweet.

I know most of the time the PSDs in the medium duties are set at 175 hp, .

better check your specs again.the psd in the ford pickups is rated at 210-215HP.and the psd in the heavier trucks are turned up a little higher

I used to run a lot of Ryder rentals with the T444E and they have them turned down that low. Don't know why, but whatever. I guess they think they are saving fuel by keeping the power down.

My fifth wheel loaded is just over 16000 pounds alone... My superduty 7.3 IDI with aurora 2000 turbo ZF 5 speed and 5:13 rear end gears pulls just fine.

my normal pulling speed is 65mph... I don't need to go any faster and I admit 70mph with that weight and the gears I have would be winding the motor more than I would like to. And I do have to down shift out of over drive for some hills and Im no speed demon on real steep hills dropping to 4th or on rare times 3rd. But my truck pulls well with out going over 1000* EGT....

How's the mileage empty and pulling the 5er? That's a good looking truck by the way.;Sweet

You're roughly 22-23k# combined, right?

Your right on the money with the combined weight Im getting 11mpg loaded and not pulling any big hills. Unloaded it sounds a little nuts to say but I only use the truck to pull my camper loaded with two cycles, water 200 gal. and 30 gal of gas (has gas station to fill the bikes) and gas for gen..

now to answer the next question someone will ask.. The deck is slotted and hinged to open for the fifth wheel hitch to hook up... look close and you will see the door edge in the picture..

You definatly have the right setup to pull that big 5th wheel though ;Sweet. 11mpg loaded pulling that weight is real good, heck single digits would be fine at that weight ;Sweet

I think my mind is getting changed about this. RLDSL said a 5.13 would do the job, and you have what amounts to a MD with 12-16k in the box. 11 mpg is not bad loaded and ready to party. Good deal.

Now, for the million dollar question, since you live on the East Coast, how's your rig in the hills?
How slow did you get down to on your worst grade pulling your combo?
