Timed mine by trial and error aNd sound, took it in to double check anyway later on and I had it at 8"btdc, they bumped it back to 6 for turbo spool but I just went by how it started up the quickest with new pump and injectors. Little less smoke but I didn't notice too much between 6-8" really

With all of those factors, what is 'right'?
I use the tool to set a base line. Get the truck running best I can ... usually takes a few tries. I agree there are several factors to consider...the proper tool will tell you where you're timed and experience will tell you where to go from there. When the timing #'s seem out of line compared to known user numbers, you know something is wrong. When your pump won't "hold" timing, once again, you know something is wrong. The proper tool facilitates getting it done right and keeping it right.
