how to time

I have an 89 f250 4wd with an e40d how do i time the beast. with out any timing tools

Very simple answer. You don't time it without any timing tools.
Just like you don't change your oil if you dont have any motor oil

Timing by ear takes expierince to an extent and isn't very accurate most of the time, I did mine by ear before I took it to a shop and I had it at 7 degrees took lots of trial and error to get there not the best method but you can get a engine running by it if necessary. Why do you think you need it timed? Blue smoke, white smoke? Excess black smoke? Is your fuel turned up?

Best bet is to find someone near you in the timing registry.
