I bought the cheap kit form Harbor Freight. There is another adaptor that doesnt look like a glow plug that fits in the glow plug hole.
Worked for me.

Well, the 19 piece Model 93644 has been downsized to the 12 piece Model 93644...

Those scoundrels...

I guess I would have to bust the case open to see if it had the M10X1.00 adapter... :backoff

Grrr...

FWIW, this is the setup I use. The gauge is actually pretty good quality, and I really like the price. It's better than the HF leak-down setup I bought for gassers and broke right away. I just chucked the VW-specific adapter that comes with it into the odd-tools drawer and bought one of the S&G adapters in the second link. It's worked well with some creative routing of the tester's hose to connect to the adapter given it's 90* bend, the hose is beefy so it's not easy to bend. YMMV.
