My truck has the glow plug system hooked up to a button on my dash. Is there any reason I shouldn't keep holding the plugs on while I am turning over the truck? Do the trucks work like that from the factory with the plugs staying on while starting?

If you let off the switch, then the battery load switches to the starter. If you hold the switch in while starting, the battery load is the glowplugs + the starter. You can decide for yourself if it's affecting the ability to start the truck. When it's really cold outside is when all the the batteries, glowplug system, and the starter get the acid test.

The only reason the factory controller pulsed the glowplugs after the engine started was to reduce the smoke all diesels have during a cold start-up.
