I have a 1995 f 250 powerstroke 4x4 I just bought. The transmission shifts ok if you step on it lightly but when it reaches overdrive the converter will not lockup. If you step on the gas heavy from a standing stop the converter will lock up as soon as it shifts into second gear then shifts immediately into 3rd then overdrive. If you keep your foot down it will stay locked up. When you ease up to level off your speed the converter unlocks. It only stays locked on acceleration. The overdrive light on the shifter is not flashing. The abs light is on. The speedo and tach work perfectly. Once the trans is warmed up it seems a little lazy going into drive. Reverse goes in immediately. Any ideas?::dunno

Hi Rich, I have not checked this yet as I will do this today. I do appreciate the tip and I will reply and let you know. I am in the middle of a fluid and filter change at the moment so it will take a little while. Thanks. Mike

Fluid was kind of brownish with a hint of a burnt smell with a little bronze looking color, but no actual metal particles. Magnet had like a black mush feeling residue, but also no metal particles. All three brake lights are working, but the speedo is a little unsteady at about 55 mph. Even after fluid & filter change there was no difference in operation. It seems to be even slower going into drive after it warms up. Reverse engages quick but forward gears almost don't engage until you touch the gas pedal.

hate to tell ya this but it sounds like it needs a tranny.take it to a tranny shop and have them put a scanner on it and chek the line pressures.

I put a gauge in the line pressure port just in front of the shift lever, and got up to 95 psi in park and neutral, I don't remember but one of the forward positions had about 120 psi and one of them had about 65 psi. But i'm not a tranny specialist so I don't know if this is good or not. I guess that I should seek professional help.

The bronze color is an issue. That would be considered as metal. Bronze is a sign of a failing bushing or washer. Most likely a bushing is wearing down beyond spec.

The slow engagement when hot would be a pressure problem. There could be leakage at the center support. Loose feed bolts sometimes cause this.

Replace the VSS, that may help a little.:D

Best thing to do is bring it by your favorite tranny shop. Have them check it out.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm having the exact same issues as OP and am wondering what his solution/problem was.

My fluid level is nice and red and does not smell burn. If I hold the accelerator down, it will stay in OD.
Reverse and drive engagement are spot on as are all the other shift points.
Truck is a '97 PSD
Thanks

Please start another thread. Explain you problem exactly as you know it. Also put your truck in your signature. You'll get better response. No one likes to scroll thru and read all the previous posts. Edit you post then delete it.
Thanks.

Hey Plato and everyone else I did get it working. I found the problem to be l.e.d tail light bulbs. As crazy as that sounds someone told me that the brake light circuit is linked to the pcm as far as through the cruise control. I cant explain the whole detail but bottom line, I didn't even know I had led bulbs until someone told me that one of my brake lights weren't working so when I checked them I found out that my truck had led bulbs. I bought the correct bulbs and replaced them and the tranny immediately started working right. I battled this for 2 months and who would have figured this. So check your tail light bulbs. Good luck
