E40D rebuild question

Guys,
in your opinion, is rebuilding my tranny in my 2 whl drive a job someone can do at home with no previous experience. I was a millwright equipment repair tech. But not sure if this is a do it yourself project or does it require too many specialized tools, also is there machine work for any suggested upgrades that would need to be performed.
