doing rear brakes

how do I know what size shoes I need? there are 3", 3.5" also 12" and 12 1/8" for the same vehicle and I'm just not sure which one to get for this vehicle.
Is there a way to tell with the vin #?

only way to tell is to take the drum off and measure, but honestly i have never seen 3 1/2 brakes on anything less then a dually.
