Lol. In 94 with the psd, auto wasn't an option. All zf5.

Yes sir, its zf5! and just to clarify, the motor ran strong and sounded great the whole time! It never actually quit running until I turned the key off! the noise I heard was coming from transmission/ transfer case area! It is a possibility that the batteries were slightly weak from cranking on it for several sessions the day before, and possible they didn't have adequate time to charge since the trip was short! The racket I heard and am concerned about was more of some grinding and popping,(may very well be the drive line skipping around) but can't help to think the tranny at least is gonna require surgery! It would shift into reverse and then pop right out as soon as the clutch was let out, (couldn't even hold it in)!
Update! The grinding and crunching I heard, I am almost embarrassed to admit, was the starter not disengaging! Bad news--the starter is toast, Good news--the tranny, transfer case, and motor still are functioning! I also replaced the slave cylinder and it shifts a lot better! The reverse issue is still an issue, but I'm not completely sure whats going on there! (lindstromjd) you might be right about the teeth, or synchronizers being bad, but once in a while it will go in and hold! IDK!!!
My owners manual says the same, which is what I meant. Lol"The factory" (as in Ford) didn't build the transmission. ZF, who DID build it, REQUIRES _synthetic_ ATF in these transmissions when commissioned behind a diesel engine.
What happens when you put it in reverse with the engine off, then start it and engage the clutch?
Other big thing to consider is the dual-mass flywheel, ticking time bomb.
