86 6.9 Head bolt ?

I have an 86 F250 i just got and i noticed the head bolts are 12 point instead of 6 point hex

This is the first 6.9 ive ever owned i was just wondering if these might be aftermarket head bolts?

As far as I know all 6.9's had 12pt bolts. I have one in the barn w/ 12pt bolts.

All of these engines have 12 pt head bolts as far as I know. Mine does. They are 7/16-14 coarse 12 pt bolts.

All the 6.9 and 7.3 have the 12 point head bolts. The 6.9 is a 12 point 7/16 socket and the 7.3 is a 1/2 12 point socket. ARP sells both hex and 12 point nuts for the 6.9 and 7.3 motors. The 12 point nuts are very expensive at about $8.00 each in either the 7/16 or 1/2 inch size.

The bolts are 12 point to handle more torque with a smaller diameter head. The IP gear bolts and starter bolts are the same way.
