ok so i bought my buddys blown up 7.3 IDI (hes an idiot and ran the EGTs a little high and lost compression in one cylinder and i have yet to investigate it further) the engine has a 100% custom turbo setup with the compressor being of the non wastegated 7.3 powerstroke variety, im taking the setup off and putting it on my 6.9 and ZF5 swapped 1973 Ford Highboy, fixing the quirks, and running it.

there are a few issues and questions i have with this, i know the setup works but he ran one manifold into the end of the other and then that manifold runs into the turbo with one single pipe. will this work or will it cause it to have to much back pressure? if so ill just cap it and run it down into the manifold later down the line. but has anyone experienced this?

next i know i wont have much boost down low, can i change the compressor wheel to build boost at different times?

he also doesent have a cdr valve and i see the actual store bought turbo kits still having one but relocated... what do i have to do to it? im just not understanding what it does or what the importance is?

it is gonna be intercooled if that makes any difference....

and please dont reply trying to talk me out of it lol idgaf im doing it.

thanks in advance for any help you can give!!

Run it like ya stole it.....dont worry about rebuilding turbo if it spins free and doesnt contact housing.....add a cdr to a valve cover plumb it in on suck side of turbo bobs yer uncle.

Plenty of INFO on what a CDR is and does here ...use search...find it read it learn it...

Just run it like ya stole it since YDGAF...

personally, i would do a twin up pipe set up.
but heat and velocity is what a turbo runs off of.
run it the way its set up, and if you dont like it, change it.
you wont get much change with the wheel alone, like jasper said, replace hot housing.

Welcome to OBs. Sounds like a pretty neat rig ;Sweet Post some pics of it or we could think you might be a troll from a gasser/hybrid site trying to get a rise out of the purely mechanical guys down here in the basement :D

Again, welcome aboard. Asking insightful, polite questions will net you lots of input from the wealth of IDI knowledge here.
