351w 87 f150 4x4 auto stalled on highway

Engine stalled on highway doing 70 running her hard going down hill. Was my first trip as a kid driving 2 hrs north and the motor just quit out on me so I pulled to median and let her cool down. Truck started up after a 1/2 hr..filled rad with water made it home limping 60mph something didn't feel right. What safety feature would cause the truck to shutdown like this?
