im looking at a truck to buy for parts and with a 1990 ford f350 custom. they claim its a 4 speed. but i thought they had switched over to the 5 speeds by this time. Is it maybe he is just looking at the shifter and it says 4 speeds with an overdrive.

without pics of said trans we cant answer this.
yes 1990's had 5 speeds, but it could have blown apart and swapped a T19 in

Yeah, you never know what someone has put in it. was just wondering if the custom might have come with a 4 speed option

It could be the 4 plus od. I've also heard of a bricknose Bronco that had a 4 speed manual trans from the factory. I've also heard of a 1992 F150 that was bought brand new with a manual 4 speed trans. Of course it was bought as cheap as possible. I think the only option was 4 wheel drive. I guess it's possible. On the other hand, the people who told me that may not have been telling the truth.

From what I remember late 87-early 88 was when they went to a 5 speed. But these trucks are now reaching 30 years old so any swaps are possible.

I had a 4 speed in my 92, but I put it there.
did the same thing in my 88 when I stole the 5 speed for my 96
I do remember dads 87 or 88 with a 302 having a 4 speed in fact my 91 with a 302 had a 4 speed.

I really really wish I could put a ST-10 behind an IDI, because then it could be put behind a powerstroke :sly

I have a friend that calls manuals with out a synchronized 1st gear a gear less than what it actually has. So a t-19 in his eyes is a 3 speed with a low range
