    6.2 IDI vs. 6.9 IDI

The 6.2 is indirect injection just like the 6.9/7.3. The 7.3 will have considerable power advantages over the 6.2, but I think the 6.2 or maybe a 6.5 would do you just fine with better MPG's.

    6.2 IDI vs. 6.9 IDI

I am pretty sure the only heads that are different are the 82 year heads that had coarse thread injectors, other than that i think they are all pretty much the same. Opsud, i find it interesting when you say that 6.2's last longer with a turbo. Please explain further if you would.

    6.9 rebuild questions

That is some crazy bank there Heath, little bit steep for me at this point. I bet you are very glad of the outcome though. Seems like spending a couple grand on a kit would be the way to go. No turbo for this motor at this point. I like the extreme simplicity of an NA motor, and they put...

    6.9 rebuild questions

Okay guys. Many of you know of my woes with my not so good investment on a 1986 F350 Crew with the 6.9. I am going to go ahead and pull this thing out in the near future. I say not so good investment, but even if I put a couple more thousand in this thing it will still be a good investment...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Got the motor put back together and it started right up, only one problem......still thumping or "backfiring" out the intake -cuss. it was quieter at first, but then as I let the motor run, it started getting louder. So plan now is, out comes both heads for a valve job and resurface job and I...

Got everything put back together. Is there something I need to be aware of when it comes to bleeding the fuel lines? Or just hook them up and turn it over and over and over till it starts? Thanks for all the help.

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Got the head installed today. Noticed my alignment dowels were on the head and not the block? Had to use some blue scotch tape to tape the gasket in place on the head and put it on that way. I used an engine hoist to set it and was much easier then when I pulled it off by hand. Ended up...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Well, I worked all day yesterday on the truck with the cavitated block and got the camshaft, all the lifter retainers, the newer rocker arms for $75, so I am happy with that. Got the cam installed today and all the lifters and retainers, plus the push rods and rockers done on the passenger...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Thanks Heath, I knew about the dot on the crankshaft gear and cam gear and was wondering about what the "Y" was for, now I know. That is too easy, I am really liking this motor more and more very simple and very well built from what I can tell. It is indeed a project. My plans at this...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Cool, gonna try to get all the parts off that truck this weekend if it works out, hoping he keeps his word. We shall see. Can I get that lifter retainer from the dealer if the deal falls through? Always nice to have a backup plan. I have been thinking about how it failed as well. I got...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

I found a 1993 7.3 with a cavitated block. Is the camshaft compatible with the 6.9? If the truck doesn't sell by tomorrow the guy said I can have what I want off it before he hauls it to the junkyard. And does it have the same dog bone lifter retainer guides as my 6.9?

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Ya, I thought it was pretty weird, i am wondering if it somehow got installed like that by a careless worker or something. The lack of total engine failure would suggest that the arm somehow miraculously made it to the oil pan without getting chewed up by the crank or the retainer was installed...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Got my IP off and intake off and head off today. Found out the problem, pictured below is the lifter retainer and it is missing an arm and I couldn't find the arm. I can only hope that it ended up in the oil pan and caused no major damage other than screwing up the lifter. The lifter however...

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

Thanks guys for all the tips, I am thinking i will remove the IP and intake and gasket just to make sure i get the job done right. I will definitely use the rubberband or zip tie trick, and it will be easier once the intake is off.

I will try that, that would save me a lot of work for sure. I forgot to mention I am attempting this with the intake manifold and IP still in place, in my mind it looked like it would slide out and slide in pretty easily, but is proving to be a huge PITA.

Drivers side, can't take the rear 2 head bolts all the way out. And if I get it out I would hate to try to put it back in without damaging the gasket. Have you taken the drivers side off while in the truck? Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

New to me 1986 F-350 Crew with 6.9

I am beginning to think it is the lifter, I lifted the head up enough to get my hand under there and feel around and seems like the valve is seating properly. Won't know till the head is off. I think the lifter hasn't came apart just might of collapsed a bit as it still lifts the push rod just...

They are indeed 16.5x9.75, BFGoodrich and super swamper and some other people still have some tires that will fit. I am hoping the same thing, if the piston is not damaged too bad I will have no problem with this thing getting me through the winter.

I already took my rockers and push rods out, they are all good, no worn out cups and no bent rods. I think the valve is not seating properly or something along those lines. Gonna take the head off and see what is up. Hopefully the valve just needs to be cleaned up. Thanks for the comments.

Well, I joined the IH Diesel club! I just bought a Chevy Crew with the 6.2 and when I was going through the motor I found the infamous cracks in the webs. Went and looked at 3 other motors here locally around Anchorage and all three had the same cracks! So I was looking on CL for some other...

    6.2. In a motorhome

They have been putting 6.2's in motor homes for years, so I would say the 6.2 would be your best bet, it sounds like you want a bolt in project. No offense with the 4bt or 6bt, but that is a good setup, but a flippin expensive setup when it comes time for any kinda parts or God forbid an over...
