Gear housing leak

I have a leak at my injection pump gear housing base, I read online someone marked like 3 lines on the gear and matching lines on the housing cover so the housing could be removed for sealing and put back and using the lines as timing marks to re align the gear wen re installing. Does this seem like a good idea? Anyone try it with success? There is a way with a small mirror also to line up the letters on it also but I have doubts don be able to see the marks. Hoping to do this without having to take everything off the front of the engine.. it only leaks after driving more than an hour or so but once it starts it really pours out

Best remove the pump from the housing as is normal.Then remove the housing ut...LEAVE the gear in place.Clean around the sealing area but do not move the engine or gear. Only rtv was ever used in this area. Once the housing is on the bench upside down its easy to clean it. Notice the front cover notch. That is the alignment for the housing. Make sure the damper timing tab is at the short fat tube which is zero degrees.

The gear in the housing won't move when I take the pump and housing off? And does making marks work to keep the gear timing? I will use rtv to seal back up when clean to install, no gasket. I'm just worried about getting the gear timing off and having no choice but to take the front of the engine off basically to fix it

You have to be careful because the gear can move. Maybe you could stick a screwdriver through the big hole in the center of the gear. Use it to hold the gear down onto the cam gear. Personally, I wouldn't recommend trying it. I'd remove the water pump and the front engine cover. To me, there's just too great of a risk to throw the timing off. Then it's not easy to get it back into time. If you do move the gear out of time, and try the mirror trick, just remember that there's two marks on the cam gear. There's a dot that lines up with the dot on the crank gear and there's a "Y" that lines up with the "Y" on the injector pump gear. They are 180 degrees apart and are difficult to tell apart with the front cover in place. That all said, here's wishing you good luck.

What I'd do is rotate the engine till the pin on the IP gear is straight up.
Put a straight edge on it, make marks etc.
Now, you can remove the IP and gear cover, do what you have to do, and when you put it back, make sure that the gear goes back in the same spot.

The bolts will keep the IP cover in pretty much the same spot as it was originally; you can leave them loose and play with it.

You *might* end up 1 tooth off either way, but you'll know that on first firing and can re-loosen the bolts and kick it a tooth.

I'd use the 'one minute gasket' stuff; rtv takes too long to dry and won't really re-make a seal if you have to loosen the bolts, even if you do this all really quickly.

I remove the IP gear cover with the gear, and the IP still bolted together.
I remove the front IP bolt cover, and install 2 longer 5/16" bolts to lock the gear in place so it wont move
be carefull tho, the ip gear housing is cast aluminum, threads strip quickly.

That's what I was wanting to do, instead of one mark I would make three so there was no way to miss the markings on it. I'll take the oval cover off and see if it looks like a doable idea with marks there, if not then I'm gonna buy a new water pump and gaskets and stuff for the front of the engine seeing as it would already be off anyway Why not at that point lol

I pull the pump, after scribing a line from pump to housing.then lift tower off leaving the gear sit in its slot.done quite a few this way. Just don't lift the gear off. No need to. Plenty of room around it to clean

Oh I've never had it off I thought the gear was like stuck into the housing somehow so it has to come off, it will stay in place on the other gear below if I'm carful then is something else holding it up or do I need to hold it up from falling while I cl an?

The gear should just stand there...... a good part of the gear is "inside" the front cover..... let me see if I can find Gary's picture......
