Anything can be made to work, with enough money. Question is how deep are your pockets?
I don't want to share how much I already payed for the F.O.R.D. since it is in my ownership.
In the US you would probably say that I am crazy, paying these European prices.
Here is some good info on the 6,9/7.3 IDI and Power Stroke engines.
Thanks for the link!

Imho, fix the IDI,
That's the idea. I'm missing the crankshaft, some rods and pistons.
I was hoping to get away with less effort and and money by purchasing an old PowerStroke. They are more common over here.

BUT - NOW - Folks: I got the message and I know now, that I don't need to search for a PS engine as donator. :thanks:

I'm not sure of you skill set and how deep you want dive in but if IDI parts are rare/expensive where you're located i'd be tempted to look into a swap of some sort. Question is are you hauling heavy? If not you could get away with a lighter duty diesel engine that has all the perks and simplicity but won't probably have the "duty cycle" that an IDI has. I'm not sure how common they'd be but a mechanical Mercedes diesel. Whats the mechanical "Ford IDI/Cummins" equivalent in Finland?
Yes you are right. IDI parts are pricy here in Europe.

European engine: I'd like to avoid for the moment. I rather look for spares to fix the broken IDI.

I like the idea of swapping a unique and locally accessible engine into the ford, but we are here for any idi questions as you take that approach first.

If you have ton of power strokes available, and you like the cab and chassis, power stroke swap it. Sure it takes a little electrical know how, but its a solid power plant in its own.

The only thing they share in common is their displacement of 444 cubic inches or 7.3 liters. I don't even think that there's one bolt that would transfer.
The lifters and the piston cooling jets (I think) are the same.
I would say....... impossible.
I agree here.
I have a feeling that an originally turbo-ed diesel that has the turbo missing would be gutless..that is to say the power level would be so low that it would be useless as a prime mover.
They are. I had an intercooler line blow off of a '99 PSD during a test drive and it would barely move itself down the road. I doubt that it would have gone highway speed.
But there is a PS7.3 2 IDI available:
No. This is NOT a IDI. Yes, it had a mechanical injector pump, but there's more to a IDI than just that. The compression is much higher on a IDI than a PSD. There's also the fact that there's no Ricardo cups in the PSD heads. Mechanical fuel injection does NOT make a IDI engine. A lot of gasoline engines used to use mechanical fuel injection and they aren't even close to being a IDI.

The HEUI injection can become a nightmare as they get on in life. Not simply electrical know-how will get you by. I unloaded both my PSDs after the one went down this path.

You just replace the injectors and the hpop as a pair, not much different than our idi's. My old mans rv is a 2001 PS and its chugging along just fine after we replaced them, 270k and rollin'

My idea is to rescue the broken IDI engine.
I have no intention to go with HEUI.
I want to stay mechanical.
My problem is just, that it is not easy to find the replacement for the broken parts. Not here in Europe and not in the USA.

Furthermore, I don't want to drive with Diesel only.
This winter has proven, that my IDI can handle WVO even with -20° C.
After Diesel got more expensive, then I just filled RUG in the stock tank.
The Navistar is just doing great.

When looking at this vid: https://invidious.fdn.fr/watch?v=mNPzot2yixg
than I know, that my van will "always do fine" - no matter what comes, it will drive.

And looking @ this video - it scares me, that someone is killing a working IDI 7.3 just for fun, while I am struggling finding the parts.

When people are blowing up IDI's for fun I usually tell myself it has cavitation real bad and the block is cracked. Makes life a whole lot easier.

it wont be cheap but could you import some parts from the US? I am sure there are several members on here that have the spare parts you are looking for that they would sell you.
