The 215 engine has been professionally built and has a cam, fire ringed heads, ported head, head studs, low compression pistons, billet tappet cover, triple valve springs and titanium keepers. 96 12 valve blown head gasket have 3500 to spend
370's make some nice power, but I already lifted my head before installing them. Besides, they are easily added with the engine in the truck.- Ym1110d

Anybody ever done the Gov. Lever adjustment?
For the record, after adjusting my lever the results were pretty much the same. Big difference. The problem came in after installing some governor springs. Apparently, the springs cause the lever to move so it was hanging below the plate. The engine wasn't fueling and wasn't producing much...- Ym1110d

If you are going to tear it apart, then put studs and fire rings on the head. The recommendations above are also good, but you won't be able to do everything for your budget.- Ym1110d

Transmission Slack
This is not the 5th gear problem. When the nut backs off, you'll mearly loose use of the gear. It's like letting the clutch out with the trans in neutral. The problem is excessive backlash in the rear end. If you take the cover off you'll be able to rock the differential carrier back n forth...- Ym1110d
