These engines stop in FOUR specific places. Cylinders 1 & 4 2 & 5 7 & 6 3 & 8 any pair goes to TDC when you shut down, that's why the engine stops so abruptly, there is a tremendous load on the two rods of the two cylinders that stop on TDC, they have to stop the rotation of the crank...
If the temp sensor wire is grounded, it will peg the meter. Coolant sensors are mounted in the front of the drivers side head. upper one is the gauge sensor, lower one is over temperature.

This is the tools to remove and install the updated injector sleeves, contain's all 8 sleeves and o'rings including the Loctite. Cost was $450, sell for $360 + P&H. Carry case separate for $10. Both never used.
The Actron CP7529 timing light is about $100 at Autozone, very good light. The Ferrett Quartz 1/4" pickup is available from Discount Tools, was a $185. The wrench is homemade.

Don't pull the injectors out just for a compression test, just pull the glow plugs out so it spins fast. I would get a couple cans of SeaFoam and pour a little down each GP hole, let sit a couple of days, then see what the compression is.
