What's the opinions on using timing tape on the harmonic balancer instead of an adjustable light?

It's been done. A member even made some custom ones with the oilburners logo on it.

As already posted. A member named riotwarrior has done this and offered the tape to members. Might contact him.

that one is pretty expensive, you can find them occasionally for 200 ish.
this one has a timing light.
but all you need is the line clamp that detects the injection pulse, and a magnetic probe on the crank, and youre golden.
theis is the meter that icanfixall rents.
super easy to use, as long as you prep your engine correctly.
(cleaning out probe hole and sanding injection line)

this is me being retarded :D

The only reason to do timing tap is if u have a clamp for picking up injection pulses and a non adjustable timing light.

It works...it works well its the only sticker on yer truck that can actually make more power!

Here is the timing light and Ferret pulse detector. A little expensive, but.

Timing light Actron CP7529 = $100.

Ferret pulse detector = $180.

Just like idiot posted. I rent the newer kent moore J33300-A meters. The include the special pump turning tool and the line clamp. I have been doing this program for a few years helping idi owners time their engines. Sadly not one dealer or shop will time our engines. Some "claim" to do it but. Usually they do it by listening to an engine run. charge you big money and tell you its fine. Hell call me and I will time it over the phone for half price... I had 10 meters at one time and have invested a significant amount of time and money in keeping everyone able to time their engines. It is very surprising how much better an engine runs when its timed correctly. A 2 degree move makes a tremendous difference in most engines. That is about a 60 thousands move of the pump. I recommend anyone that uses my program to make several timing marks at different degrees of timing. Then when they don't have my meter they can change the timing and know exactly what the timing is because they already made the marks. If you have a new rebuilt pump and time your engine figure that timing will last at least 50,000 to 75,000 miles. Maybe more. but change the injectors and you will need to retime the engine. Timing in completely dependant on the pop pressure of the injector you choose to time by. I can supply the degrees of offset so you can time off any cylinder you want. But many years of doing this we have found that using cylinder number 1 or 4 will time these engines exactly the same. Most van application idi engines time off the number 4 cylinder because its easier to reach in the van chassis. Occasionally we find a van engine end up in a truck body too but thats not a problem. All idi engines are the same. Just some outside parts are different from a van to a truck body.

Hey Gary, what are all the degree offsets for the idi engines? As you said, I knew that 1&4 are both the -20 offset

It'll work fine so long as the tape is marked appropriately for the diameter/circumference of the dampener. I say just get a dial back timing light, they're cheap enough. Very useful and you'll likely use it regularly for various engines.

Well now I have to find this individual cylinder offset. Just knew someone was going to ask. Will do that right after my nap...:D

20 deg offset is because the mag pick up hole is NOT 0 deg timing mark..thats the lil shorter hole. Thus the mag probe hole is 20 deg off from 0 deg

I have the ferret adapter, I just don't have the adjustable light. Reading the reviews on the actrons and similarly priced meters leads me to believe some are decent quality and some are absolute junk. And as much as I love the Matco truck I really don't want to spend that much money on a timing light.
