First off, the truck is a 1993 F250, ZF 5 speed and a BW 1356. the front hubs are not the issue, nor is the front differential. The DS will not lock in and engage.

I park the truck on the side of the street, up against the snow bank due to it not fitting in the driveway with the other vehicles. I go out to take off the plow. I started it, let it idle for 5 minutes while I moved teh car to put the plow in the driveway.

I hop in the truck, put it in first gear and ease out on the clutch...it won't move because one back tire is on ice. No big deal, the hubs are locked in, so I pull the T case back one notch to go into high. I ease out on the clutch, the truck moves 6 inches and then I hear a BANG, the can of WD I had on the dash comes flying off and the CD player skipped....yea. Not what you want to hear.

The truck wouldn't move, I was stil on ice. So I took the T case out of 4x4, I backed up onto dry asphalt and pulled into the driveway, took the plow off.

Then I pake the truck to the little field down below, chain it to a tree, put it in 4x4, put it in first gear and let the clutch out, I got out, stepped back and looked under the truck, the front DS isn't turning.

I got it out of the field, drove to the driveway and laid underneath. No matter WHAT position I put the T case in, the front DS will not engage inside. It's full of ATF, it's pretty clean with no signs of water or metal particles. The chain looks to be connected from what I can see, and all I can figgure is I stripped out something inside or broke off an engagement fork.

Any ideas? Worth rebuilding or just look for a used BW 1356?

Chris it sounds like the locking collar isn't engaging properly. They're pretty simple to tear down and dissect. Could be one of the ears broke off the fork for the locking collar.

i have never had any experience with t-cases, other than the other day in school when we took a BW apart, but it sounds like something bigger than an engagement fork broke. possibly a shaft or a gear. i would tear it down and see what happened.

The case is stupid simple to tear down. Just pay attention to how it comes apart and you will have no problems.

Mine was stuck in 4wd so I tore it down turns out the oil pump had spun loose (common issue it seems) and jammed up in there. So a new pump arm and she was good to go.

Surprised no one suggested taking it off and installing a NP 205.

With the way it popped leads me to believe the locking collar got hung up part way. And may have made a mess of things when it popped.

I'd say from the big bang that happened, she's toast.

As far as an NP205, if you can fine one around here for under $1000 I would LOVE to have it!! People around here thing that EVERYONE is into mudding and they should price all 4x4 parts as luxury items....it sucks!!

I'm going to have a HELL of a time finding a 1356 for under $400

Before you buy a new one crack yours open and see what is up. There isn't that much in there to go wrong and parts are available. And if you rebuild it yourself you will have some piece of mind, if you just get another used one you will have no idea what condition it is in.

I wish I could take it apart, but I need to leave the truck in one piece in case I need to move it. Once I get another case, I will tear this one down and post pics...any parts inside that are still good that anyone might need will be up for grabs...most likely just for the price of shipping. Stay tuned!

Have two or three 205's and a one ton manual 1356 Chris...need at least 500 for a married 205, $350 for a divorced 205 and I guess bout 325 for a 1 ton 1356...shipping on those would be seriously sad news

When you take it apart do some pictures so you have an example of how it came apart. Pics during disassembly are priceless...:sly
