OK Guys...... I know this is an IDI Thread..... BUT!!!!!

Just to set the record straight, I do agree the IDI is a dependable, simple engine, and I do plan on owning one in the future...... I know of one I would like to own now, but the finances are not there at the moment. That being said......

However, the 6.0 is NOT A PIECE OF JUNK LIKE everyone claims. I can say this, I OWN ONE!!!! Mike has one also, and I have not read about major issues that he's had. I can say from personal experience these are a reliable engine. So you do not have to look at my sig here are the stats as of RIGHT NOW! It is a 2003, yes an 03. It has 100200 miles on it. The EGR valve is the factory one, never been out, never been cleaned. The turbo is the one that came from the factory. It has been in the shop 2 times in its life. One for a coolant leak (no not a head gasket) when the PO owned it, and once for the PCM flash to fix the stiction issue. I have replaced the alternator, oil, oil and fuel filters and have fed it diesel. It is 100% stock except a FUMOTO valve. The only starting issues I have had is when the batteries were dead from the failing alternator. I know there were issues with these in the beginning, and there are many issues of people causing their own problems by putting tuners on them, and running them outside their design parameters and blowing them up, and the compalin because it broke. I could say bad things about any engine..... such as the 6.9 is junk because is has the block heater issue, or the 7.3 is junk because it cavitates, or the 5.9 Cumapart is junk because the exhaust manifold with lift the head........ I am not trying to step on any toes, but the newer engines get beat down, and they do not necessarly deserve it. Part can be more expensive, but... I am at 100k miles and have 8 factory injectors in the truck. If it were an IDI I would need to be contemplating a tuneup and replace the pump and injectors, with my truck what do I need to do at 100k? Coolant flush, routine oil change, fuel filters, and put more fuel in it.

I can say this from OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE not the hearsay, and reading the hate stories on the internet. So please, remember this.... the 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4 PSD are different than an IDI, not inferior, or less reliable. my 6.0 is my family vehicle that I send my fionce and kids out in.... I am that confident in it. If I was not, either I would drive it, or it would be gone.......

Sorry if I came across the wrong way. I don't normally bash on other vehicles and it wasn't my intent to offend anyone  I guess I'm a little bitter as I have been burned by the 6.0 way way way way way too many times for me to ever give them a second chance. From my experience with them (engines unmodified fleet trucks) I would consider you very lucky that you haven't been through the hell that others have.

I know there have been nightmares, but for as many nightmares there were , there were just as may or more good stories. Those just do not get told. Mine was owned by an older couple, that left it stock, and had it serviced at the regular intervals. I bought it and have done the same. I wonder if part of your issues were they were fleet trucks, and treated that way by the drivers..... you know nothing parties like a rental......

I love the slantnose trucks. My first vehicle was an 85 F250 6.9. Back in 99-00, when I was looking for vehicles, that's all I wanted. I was into diesels, at age 15, when diesels weren't cool yet. Traded that off on a 90 F250 7.3. Then played with some newer gas trucks, got into the 2nd gen 12v Cummins field, then traded one of those CTD's on my current 85.

I'm wanting to do a full resto on it at some point, but no work is making things hard.

I love the IDI, but feel that there is one other stone reliable engine out there, the VE pumped Cummins. Yea, they can make power, but I think those things rock because of the almost instant cold weather starting. If I ever get the chance to restore this truck, I'm surely putting a very nice rebuilt 6.9 in it, but would also like to pickup another slantnose and put a VE pumped CTD in it.

I've never owned an IDI that didn't start instantly in cold weather. :dunno I can appreciate your admiration of the Cummins, but I have to admit I think this is the most B.S. excuse I've read yet. LOL

No offence... pick a better excuse. There are some. :)

On the early 6.9 83,84 A blocks, the area around the block heater is weak, and using the block heater can cause the block to crack in that area. the older 6.9 blocks, this was rectified....

Wasn't really a rant, just tired of the 6.0 bashing........

Call me crazy, but I'll take the girl with calloused hands and a farmers tan any day... How 'bout them cowgirls!

I just got home after working 10 hours with my tractor in a friends property. The dog was waiting at the driveway entrance and ran at the side of the van that was pulling the trailer with the tractor on top. Really tired, I got off and was licked and jumped all over like every time I comeback from work. I got the tractor off the trailer and parked the van. I was walking towards the house when I saw her. Pushing the wheelbarrow with a huge pile of peanuts plants coming from the garden. She left the wheelbarrow, run to me and gave me a kiss and a hug. For few minutes I was not tired anymore. "I needed that kiss". I told her.

My wife is a hardworking woman, my trusted friend and partner in every thing we have. I've lived more years together with her than the years before I met her. Yep, I'll take my farm girl, with her callused hands and her farmer tan any day too.

Burt.

One thing the 6.0 cant touch an IDI is cost and ease of maintenance. A guy at work's brother said injectors were 800-900 dollars each!!! This was Ford putting them in under warrenty. It costs a 1/3rd of that to do an entire IDI.

Like ive said before. My truck may not have a factory shine, it cant spin the wheels in a storm of black smoke, but it can get me to work and haul all my tools and materials (most recent haul was 1200 pounds of cinder block in the bed). She takes a lickin and keeps on tickin

It's funny how things can change, when I was younger I always thought the bricknose 87-91 Fords were butt ugly with their huge headlights. I must have changed because now that I have a 90 F250 I am in love with this body style. I like the 92-97 body style second best.

Yes I think our IDIs are going to be appreciated even more in the future. They might not get their respect due right now, but just wait until todays high tech, super powerful turbo diesels start racking up some miles and need more maintenance and repairs. I don't even understand how the average dude is supposed to be able to do any more than an air filter and oil change on these modern diesels??

I think maybe IDI owners are a different breed.

I dont understand how 87-91 can be called a bricknose and 80-86 a slant nose when you look at the shape of the hoods at the front on both. Seems like 80-86 should be the bricks because the are flat mostly and the 87-91 should be slants because of the 5"ish slant down the front of the hood.
