The 6.7 is a piece of chit. It is Dodge's version of the Ford 6.0 story, or of the Chevy 5.7 diesel story.
The 6.4 has been VERY reliable. Ford and IH did their homework with this one. The 6.4 forums are much quieter than the 6.0 forums have ever been. Mileage ranges from crappy to okay however. I have heard from those who add the SCT or Spartan tunes, that they can get into the high teens, low twenties running on the 250(I think) tune, but using normal driving habits.

Wouldn't you like to know
I've heard the same stuff, all the new top 3 diesels suck with the Partical Filter on em. If you remove that they come to life power & MPG increase. If I had to choose I'd get a Ford 6.4l if you ain't paying for the truck, fuel or repairs I wouldn't worry about it.

I was talking to a friend of mine that knows a dodge tech & he said they have alot of the new 6.7s come in there for plugged PF & tranny issues. Hard to crank up the power & make them powerful & reliable with all the emissions junk on em at the same time.

I know it is more of a hassle but why not just get a good f350 or f450 commercial or utility body and transplant a 2nd gen cummins with a build up auto or a nv4500 and You'll get the best of both worlds for less money. I think in the end You'll get a better work truck, I'm almost done with mine and it wasn't too hard and I had to rebuild the tranny Myself.

I drive a 08 F550 at work. Ford has the best cab and chassis it turns sharp and rides good with no more leaf springs in the front. It has 65000km on it. 2nd engine, 2nd rad and 2nd exhaust. Its worth buying the extended warranty for the drive terrain the engine replacement costs about 25000$ if it goes after warranty! We lost about 4mpg's compared to our 03 6.0L we traded in. The 08 Ford is a lot better truck to drive.

ez-
hybrids are fine for your own personal ride. Company trucks are destined to be beaten like a rented mule.

I also an a Ford man. I own a '94 Explorer, and the '85 F350. My fiancee has a '96 Protege (made by Mazda). We even have a '86 Ford parts truck, and a '80 F250 sitting in a storage unit (Haven't mad up our mind on what to do with it yet). Ford and Dodge both have their pros and cons. A buddy of mine once said, "Give me the Cummins engine bolted to the Allsion transmission and set it between a set of Ford fenders and you've got a hard working truck".

Sorry it took me so long to get on here, but I have a friend that works for cummins in their diesel injector division (tests injectors from the baby 4 bangers all the way to ship engines). He drives a 6.4 f350. I work at a dealership and the 6.4's arent great by any means but they are the best in the light truck market at the moment. This emissions crap is killing the diesels slowly, but they are getting better and the 6.4 is a testemtent to that, hell even the later 6.0's arent tooo bad. the biggest thing is keep in mind that when it goings in for running rough, odds are the cab is coming off. these new ones arent the loud, smoky, and bulletproof motors the idi's are. the new ones are restricted to death to be emissions complient but have so many more power goodies that they wind up with more power.

one of the ford instructors at uti that I went too has a good buddy that is a big wig in the ford development end of things. He was telling a bunch of us about how they took a 6.0 and stripped all the emissions **** off, rewrote the programming for reliable power and stuffed it in an f350 test mule, it had only slightly better emissions than our idi's (worse than the 7.3 powerstroke) but was BARELY streetable due to the power! He said that would have to detune that thing down to a third of its capable power or there would be wrecks everywhere, but that is without egr, egr cooler, restricted cold air coolers, the list goes on and on.

anyway, go with the 6.4 it isnt as dependable as the idi but its a work horse and so far has proven itself worthy of being behind a blue oval grill.

What gassers are available in the bigger chassis?

The emissions controls and fuel prices have taken every benefit away from owning a diesel. If I only had the option of a NEW chassis, it would be a gasoline engine.

Bottom line, you cannot afford for a work truck to be down. Not for glitches, not for engine replacements, not for particulate filter clogs. NOTHING.

a gasser up here is very impractical for a work horse that goes out in the field the main reason is because every where you go there is diesel and second a tidy tank or slip tank has to meet higher standards to transport gas 1203 than diesel 1202 therefore they are more $$$ to purchase.
