I generally do around home too. While out shopping in warmer weather, I won't even roll up the window(s). When I go to a bigger town, though, I do pull the keys out and stick them in my pocket. I feel that I have a better chance of driving myself home that way. Of course if I left the mass of keys that is my keychain laying on the seat, no one would want to bother messing with all of that just to steal my old truck.but I leave the key in my truck and the door unlocked (I really can't stand unlocking doors) but my theory is that if they can figure out how to crank it up and make it move, they deserve a few laps around the parking lot.
I also feel fairly safe around home. Between the glow plugs that are on a self-returning toggle switch and the somewhat hidden push button for the starter, no body will be able to get my truck started in order to steal it.
Then there's the saying that I've used for several years now. I can leave the doors unlocked, keys in the ignition, a $100 bill on the dash, along with a note that says "this is yours but you have to take the whole truck!" and everything will still be there in the morning. Having an ugly truck is just one more theft prevention device and it's free!
