REMOVAL
Raise the vehicle so the wheels clear the floor, and install safety stands under the rear axle.
Remove the wheel and brake drum. Go to Step 4. If the brake drum does not clear the rear brake shoes and linings, go to Step 3.
Rear Retracting Brake Shoes
Using a screwdriver, move the brake shoe adjusting lever off the brake shoe adjusting screw nut and, using Brake Adjustment Tool D81L-1103-C or equivalent, loosen brake shoe adjusting screw nut to obtain clearance for brake drum removal. Remove the brake drum.
NOTE: Some brake drums will not come off easily.
Inspect:
The rear wheel cylinder for excessive leakage that can contaminate brake system parts, and rebuild as necessary.
NOTE: A small amount of brake fluid is always present and acts as a lubricant for the wheel cylinder piston.
Rear brake shoes and linings for contamination, and replace as necessary.
Rear brake shoes and linings for minimum thickness, and replace as necessary.
Springs for heat discoloration, and replace as necessary.
Brake Drum Inside Diameter
Replace brake drum if maximum inside diameter is exceeded.
NOTE: Brake drum maximum inside diameter is molded into the face of the brake drum. Using Rotunda Brake Drum Micrometer 104-00046 or equivalent, measure the brake drum inside diameter.
Remove the brake shoe retracting spring.
Remove the parking brake lever bolt lock nut, at the back of the brake backing plate, and the parking brake lever bolt.
Remove the parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake lever and remove the parking brake lever.
Disconnect the brake shoe adjusting lever cable from the brake shoe adjusting lever and remove the brake shoe adjusting lever cable.
Remove the cable guide.
Remove the adjusting lever return spring and the brake shoe adjusting lever.
Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
Remove the brake adjuster screw assembly.
Automatic Adjuster Components
Remove brake shoe anchor pin guide plate.
Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs, the brake shoe hold-down spring pins and the rear brake shoes and linings.
INSTALLATION
Lubricate the brake backing plate friction points. Use Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or an equivalent silicone compound meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A.
Position the rear brake shoes and linings and install the brake shoe hold-down spring pins and the brake shoe hold-down springs.
Install the brake shoe anchor pin guide plate.
Apply Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331- (Motorcraft WA-10) or an equivalent silicone compound meeting Ford specification ESE-M1C171-A and assemble the brake adjuster screw assembly.
NOTE: To prevent incorrect installation, the socket end of each brake adjuster screw is stamped R or L.
Position the brake adjuster screw assembly.
Install the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.
Position the brake shoe adjusting lever cable.
Install the cable guide.`
Automatic Adjuster Components
Position the adjusting lever return spring and the brake shoe adjusting lever and hook the brake shoe adjusting lever cable to the brake shoe adjusting lever
Test the operation of the automatic self-adjuster.
Pull the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and check that the brake shoe adjusting lever rotates the brake shoe adjuster assembly.
Release the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and check that the brake shoe adjusting lever advances to the next notch on the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.
Install the parking brake lever.
Attach the parking brake rear cable and conduit to the parking brake lever and position the parking brake lever.
Install the parking brake lever bolt and, at the back of the brake backing plate, the parking brake lever bolt lock nut.
Install the brake shoe retracting spring.
Adjust the brakes.
Install the brake drum.
NOTE: The brake drum spring nut is not necessary for installation.
Install the tire and wheel assembly.
