Mystery solved. The one on the left is what was in my zf5, the other is what rock auto said was for a four speed. One of them has an OD that's .001" larger than the other when measured at the threads, both have a 1.5 metric thread pitch. The original still worked but I changed it out anyway since I bought a new one. The plug was obviously the culprit. It's nice to have reverse lights.
