im new to the site and wana say hi,,,,

im looking at a 1995 inter 8100 w/ 12' dump,, powered w/ dt466 210hp, fuller 6 speed and 410 rears,,,
this truck has 210'000 miles and was a tractor turned dump

i have a 20 ton trailer loaded w/ a 30000lb excavator,,,

my 1982 inter 1800 w/ stock dt 466 ,, 6+1 tran,pulls the same trailer with about a 16000lb load ,, it dogs,, i hate it ,,, so will this truck do the job or is it a dog as well and would i be better off getting same truck w/ cummins 300hp ? thanks Robbie

ps. maybe mods can help w/ the hp issue on both trucks?

Here's my .02 worth: I would say it'll probably be only slightly better. First thing I'd want to know is if the '82 is turbo or NA. If the old truck was N/A, the new truck will probably do better since it's turbo.
My truck is a DTA466 turbo 210HP, but it's turned up a bit. It does pretty good, gets the job done.
If you're pulling 35-40,000lbs, you really need 300+ HP to make it half-enjoyable to drive. 210 will get the job done, but hills will be a pita.

Doesn't have to be a cummins to be 300. IH makes plenty of 300HP diesels. The DT466 can be 300HP, the DT530, DT570 & HT570 are all available with 300+ HP and tons of torque.

The 82 will likely have the rotary pump & is a pain(and risky) to turn up. The 95 will be way easy to turn up, its pump is almost identical to a 94-98 Dodge/ Cummins. Likewise, it uses the same aftermarket fuel plates, governer springs, and laser cut delivery valves :Sly .

just thinking on the 95 what about a fuller6609 9 speed tranny swap do u guys think that would make the difference??/ or should i spec more hp like the cummins 280 w a 9speed?

All depends on EGT's. If they're too high you could melt a turbo or piston on a long pull. 35,000lbs in tow behind a 210HP DT466 is do-able if the motor is stock. Turn up the pump and the EGT's have to increase. That's why the higher HP DT's have increased timing and a different turbo so the EGT's stay safe.

pricing the same 8100 w a 280 cummins/9speed also 250000 miles 12 ft dump space for a pusher axle ????? u guys thing the 280 / 9speed combo will be better then a turned up dt466 w/ 6speed??

Much better. You have 80 more horsepower, more cubes and more transmission with more gears. A 9 speed is a "big box" transmission, probably has 2 countershafts instead of one. That's the kind of truck you need to pull a 40,000lb trailer around on a regular basis with ease. The IH with the 210 HP DT will do it, but it will struggle on hills.
