Light bulbs don't dim, but the color of the plastic, quality of the wiring, and voltage going to them can cause a dimmer appearance. You could put new bulbs in your truck and it won't be any brighter. Some have tried upgrading to the 194 (?) bulb I think it is... but they get hotter, so I don't know how well that works. LED white bulbs might be the ticket if they can be had, but you'll loose your dimmer function on the headlight switch, not that I've ever wanted to dim my dash lights in 26 years anyway.

Anybody ever try these? http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/bulb_specs.htm

Thats where I get my LED's, I used the WLED-X5 part number in my 93'. They spread the light a lot better than the forward facing LED bulbs.

On the cluster, I removed all the guages and painted them individually. I also removed the blue bulb filters and painted the inside of the case with chrome paint and used 194 bulbs. It's a lot easier to see at night now.

Mel.. My eyes can't look down the road when its bright and then see the dash. Its terrible too. I have tested the 194 bulbs but... I'm only getting 9.7 volts to the dash and extra gauges I have. I don't know where to look for the low voltage either. I recall in the long ago past I could see the dash fine no mater what time of day or nite. No the two Banks gauges are so dim compared to the Isspro EV gauges. I think thats because of the differance in the manufacture of the gauge illumination. The Banks has one bulb 194 and the Isspro has two smaller type bulbs. I might just change the bulb system in the Banks gauges to what the Isspro has.... We will se later.... I'm kinda thinking it just suxs getting older with eyes that have seen a brighter day...

The WLED-5 bulbs I got from superbrightleds.com should fit in the 80's guage clusters. They both use a 194 bulb.

Now that I no longer drive the IDI on 2500 mile road trips this has become less of an issue for me, but wow the dash is dim. I removed the dash last year and replaced all the bulbs with hotter ones, a VERY marginal improvement. I think I'm going to mess with LEDs too. That and some luminescent paint.
