Could be you have an air handling leak, most likely an exhaust leak at the collector pipe, it is a common leak point. Put eyes on it, if its leaking that would be your culprit

The collector is the part that the turbo up pipe attaches to, its just a slip fit joint

Did the black smoke go away after you sealed it? A good running engine shouldn't be rolling black smoke.

An exhaust leak is not going to blow blue/white smoke. That’s just silly talk. I’d bet ip timming.
Changes in the air fuel mixture will absolutely change exhaust color. An exhaust leak will make the turbo under-perform, causing more fuel to air, making low power and black smoke. A better running diesel will smoke a light haze gray/white when under heavy boost.

Black smoke indicates some over fueling, like when you stomp on the throttle to pass another vehicle. White smoke is probably oil consumption. Is your oil level going down in the oil pan?
