yea ive been soaking the manifold bolts with PB blaster on my truck for a few weeks now. does anyone know what size socket the bolts on the manifolds are? mine are so rusted i can't get anything to fit good on them.

IIRC, the bolts that hold the manifolds to the heads are 9/16, and the nuts that hold the pipe to the manifolds are 5/8.

As to the original question, PB Blaster excells when compared to WD-40, proven in my sons science fair project a few years ago. He took a set of bolts with nuts on them that were new, rusted them up together, and then scientifically applied identical amounts of both products to the sample bolts and allowed each to soak for the exact same amount of time. The bolts were then removed, and the torque required to loosen each one was measured. In each case, the PB Blaster bolts required much less torque to remove, then the WD-40 treated bolts did. We would have liked to have included Kroil in that test, but time and availability prevented it.

My personal preference is PB ;Sweet ...cut my teeth on it---swear by it and buy it by the gallon when I see it on sale!

WD is a light duty etchant with "some" redeeming moisture displacement value......

Have never tried Kriol :sorry:

found some

Is that a decent price?....may just have to try some :D

Just had to remove the manifold bolts on an 88, used a 14mm impact socket on them, fits tight had to drive the socket on some of them. They were really rusted. Used a deep socket on them, so I could hold it and drive the bolt out. Use WD40 to soften the rust.

I haven't seen anyone refer to liquid wrench here. Even though I am sold on Kroil, I used to get very good results from LW.

WD40 is OK for what it is designed for, water displacement, but it is a devil if used for lock lubricant. once in there, the solvent dries up and leaves a sticky coating. it really doesn't penetrate rust very well because of the paraffin (or whatever the waxy substance is) content.

I have only used WD40 and PB. I prefer the PB for just about everything (although WD on fishing lures works good LOL). I haven't tried Kroil, but it sounds like I've been missing out on a good product. I haven't been on here much in the last few days, so I figured since I'm finally on again that I'd add my opinion.

PB rocks, i was reading somewhere that a 50/50 mix of acetone and tranny fluid can really get in and loosen stuff.

I also use a 50/50 mix of atf and cheap laquer thinner on VW exhaust nuts, it will take them off, not quite as good as Kroil but pretty darn close.

I just tried a new product (at least to me) by CRC called "Freeze-Off". This stuff works! It's supposed to "chill" the bolt/nut and "crack" the rust while penetrating oil seeps into the treads. I had some exhaust bolts on an Explorer (flange to manifold) that PB oil wouldn't even let budge. Sprayed it down with this CRC stuff, and let it soak for about 5 minutes, and the bolts came right out! I had bought ONE can (my buddy at the parts store had six cans and sold me one for .25 to try before he ordered more). I went down the next morning and bought the other FIVE cans for another $1.25 (He had gotten them shipped in for a trial thing). I will continue to buy it whenever I see it now.
