Ford the stockers, about 10-15 seconds max. Found this quick video on zd9. https://youtu.be/hzSSc3GOk2M
Their used to be a good one comparing 3 different brands, can't find it now.
But on the other hand, some are self regulating. You can run them long as you want. I had some ac Delco 60g's in my chevy, left them on for about an hour while driving once. Still fine.

How long am I "allowed" to push the glow plug button before they can burn out? I tried them right after cold startup today, it definitely cleared out the white smoke much faster. I think my batteries may be a bit weak though...

Really depends on what is in it for plugs and condition of the wiring to them. If they are spade connector berus, 10 seconds should be plenty. If you plan on keeping manual control of the plugs, there are some good plugs out there that wont burn out from abuse. If kept manual, they WILL get abused at some point.

Where should a cold start driver start with air intrusion? Is there a common checklist?

Injector orings, return lines, fuel line olives, the piece of soft line between the frame and lift pump.
(Not necessarily that order, but those are the problem 99% of the time)
