Well read drive shaft problems

well I went to replace my carrier bearing today. Well the rear drive shaft wouldn't come apart. We got it apart with a hammer...... Not the best I know but i cleaned it up cause there was a bunch of old grease and rust but now it won't go back together. Everything looks good the only thing I can think of it's bent? Not sure what's wrong with it.

The seal on them is a very tight fit. And most of them can only go one way

i have found its a two person job. one to support and align, the other to smack it together with a board and hammer. just to get past the seal. once the seal is over the splines it goes easier.

Nope it just won't go back together.

Here's a trick I've done before. I think usually the seal that covers the splines between the two screws off. I've unscrewed it, slid it over the splines, finished installing the other part of the driveshaft, and then screwed the seal back on. When I'm talking about unscrewing the seal, I mean the metal cover that it mounts into.

if your talking about putting the two pieces of drive shaft back together they only go back one way and they are a very tight fit together, one spline is large than the rest and must line
Up with a grove that is also larger. I put mine together on the ground and had someone help me install it one holding up shaft other mounting carrier bearing and then rear portion of shaft

Isn't the drive shaft suppose to slide though? Once in the pickup arnt they suppose to slide a little? Cause mine won't slide at all.

Yes they should slide a little bit. Frozen is not good. Pull it out and disassemble it and grease the shaft where it is supposed to slide. None use will cause rust.

Yeah I've done that and it still won't slide.

It will NOT move out of the truck? Is the slider rusted? And do you have the drive shaft timed? It can go together only one way. There is a bigger slot that accepts a larger spline.

No it's out of the truck. The slider won't slide with the driveshaft back together. It's frozen and it was rusted when I took it apart but cleaned it up and grease it and now it's stuck you can get it lose with a hammer. But I don't know if I want to do that. What is drive shaft being timed?

One of the slots and one of the splines are bigger than all the others. You can assemble it only one way and it will be timed. Driveshafts are balanced for a smooth ride.

ive done that it won't slide so I'm thinking of taking it to the drive line shop to see what's wrong with it.
