Anyone ever work on a triton powered tuck or van?

There is a really nice 5.4 or 4.6 v8 conversion van near me for sale, that has trans problems and alot of miles. Very clean no rust and cheap.

I'd like to convert it to my 7.3 and c6

What kind of wiring nitemare am I in for?

I assume its got an E40D, 3.50 gears

Thoughts?

I was really looking for a conversion van with a 300 and a c6, hoping it would ease the conversion. But this van is very nice its tempting.

Wiring nightmare? You're putting a ONE WIRE mechanical engine into it! Wiring should be a snap, you're just taking most of it out. You will just need a switched 12v to run the fuel cutoff, and a temp switch to run the cold advance. You may also have to change the gauge cluster , depending on year, the cluster may be driven by the computer. Which you will be taking out.

It's getting that drive train INTO a van that may not be enjoyable. Simple, just no fun at all.

If it is indeed a 5.4 or a 4.6L van, it should be in the 92+ body correct? If so, I would look for a 91-94 Van with an IDI, and use it for a doner. The instrument cluster in the gasser van will be run with the PCM. The IDI would not be. I know they had the IDI in the newer body style vans for a couple of years. I would not try to use the 73-91 body as the interior doner, because they are VASTLY different between the two vans (the 73-91 body used the same as the 73-79 pickup instrument cluster). So, it could be done, but would be along the same lines as a PSD to IDI conversion..... out with all the electronics, and in with the mechanical driven cluster.

Must agree w/freebird01. The E-series is not a friendly platform for anyone used to working on Fs.

Suggest anyone REALLY spend some time in an E engine compartment (from all three angles: above, behind and below) before buying one, no less planning a serious project like an engine swap.

That being said, my 7.3 will be coming out soon for head gaskets. Glad I've already had it out once, and that my buddy's better than I am at such madness!

Oh, and, if swapping instrument clusters become part of the job, pls note that although the body shell has not changed since 1992, the dash system has changed once or twice over the years.. Highly doubt older cluster will fit later production dashes.

Ive had two gasser E150 conversion vans. 93/95, Yeah not the easiest to work on.

I'd prefer a 91 or earlier van. Less crap, more mechanical stuff like the speedo and such. I am not really insterested in ABS or air bags or any serious creature comforts like power windows, locks, auto climate control, ect. Cruise and AC are about it. But finding a earlier van worthy of this amount of work isnt easy.

Couple more quick thoughts. As someone has said here somewhere in recent weeks, the IDI diesels are taller and wider than the 460 gas engine (Haven't seen a v10 up close). One of my attached pics shows my 7.3 going in. Long hoist and a very short chain!

And, as the other pic shows, the floor of my '92 has a large raised hump for the E4OD in this application. The 2003 gas E and 2002 PSD Es I drive at work have a nearly flat cover at the rear of the doghouse cover. Suggest you check into this, as you may find the floor of a later gas E may not accept the IDI E4OD without floor modification. Don't know if the pre-'91s have different floors.

I'm looking at this electrical nightmare of a van. It'd be a sweet ride if everything was working right. Guy was asking $1500 for it. I was stupid and offered $500. He's been calling constant wanting me to come get this thing out of his life.

Corrosion issues? or did some Bubba try to fix it himself?
