vacuuming a/c

We are recharging Charlie's (landscapeman) a/c and We'll vacuum the system first but I wonder if I have to leave it running while I vacuum it like I do when I recharge it. Anyone knows? We are doing it now so if anyone can give us a tip that would be great.

No, you don't want it running. Hook up the vac, letter pull for an hour or so to be sure all the moisture is vacuumed out, or at least most of it. A good test if you have time is to unhook everything, leaving a vacuum on the system over night and then check it with the gauges in the morning. If you still have the same vacuum, you are sealed. I am guessing you may not have that kind of time though.

Thank You that's exactly what I wanted to know. I do have the gauges but not the time so I used some dye and it does not show any so I think it is sealed. I will leave it running for about 1 hour and then recharge. When I did mine I did not do any vacuum and even though it is cold I think the vacuum gives it that extra cooling so since I have the pump this time We want to do it the right way.

The longer you let the vacuum pump pull it down, the better.

Hook it up and let'er run! I let mine run for 2 hours on the Supra when I tinkered with it, and thats in the dry desert out here. In a more humid area, I'd let it run longer if I could.

OK, I need help real quick again guys. We can't find where to put the orifice tube (ac filter) in the ac system. I have the new reservoir and it said to also install this orifice tube but I can't find where to.

Any help?

I'm not familiar with your system, but normally the orifice is in the tube connecting to the accumulator---I think what your calling the reservoir.

Well We got it vacuumed and recharged later. The orifice tube was dirty I think good thing We decided to look at it, no wonder it didn't cool at all. Now after recharging it it feels very nice and cold real fast too.

Attached are some pics of what We used to vacuum the system and then what we used to recharge it too and just in case a pic of the location for the orifice tube.

What was involved in getting that filter screen assembly apart.
I've got the opportunity once again to pull my A/C system apart after a 4 hour run towing a travel trailer in 94 degree heat win no A/C due to a puked compressor.

That orfice tube shows signs of the dreaded black death the compressors see. Is this why you recharged the system? Did you replace the compressor?

I was noticing that too. Did you guys flush that system out before recharging, or at least add an inline filter? If not, you may be getting to do this again shortly.

Yeah, I wondered about that as well. System is probably full of crap and will plug the orifice again in short order if not flushed. Not to mention the compressor, even if replaced will not enjoy a diet of the black sludge...

Ron, to get the orifice tube out You just need a 1/2" quick connect tool to separate the two pipes and just snap it on to re-install it. You may need a pair of needle noose pliers if it is as stuck as the one in the pic.

Now about the system, it was charged but it would not work bc of this orifice tube being clogged. We discharged it, flush it, vacuum it for about 1 1/2 hours and then recharge it with the proper pre-oiled refrigerant. At the same time I replaced the reservoir (small black tank) since I thought it would be good with all that stuff in the OT. The a/c is really cold now and it comes ON fast which is what We wanted. I don't know how much time is left on this compressor, hope it is a long time, but is has not leaked so far .

Well, that makes me just want to get mine cleaned up since I've got to replace the compressor before the rally.

Dang PRTJ'***** me like a ton of bricks this weekend on a camper retrieval in 94 degree heat with no A/C.

Ez, what did you use to flush the system with and how did ya go about doing it.
I think I'm gonna start on that first before I swap out the compressor. I think I have one good one left out of th 4 engines that I have.
