I called in sick today and worked on my F450.:D....I got a bunch of things done and replaced. ;Sweet With winter getting close I decided to test a few GP's through the pass side harness - 3 were open or dead. I decided to verify a 3 bad GP's or a bad harness - the harness was toast as all the GP's on the pass side were good. Where's the cheapest place to buy new under valve cover harnesses? The truck starts ok now but at-20C it won't with alteast 3 dead GP's.

I did get a chance to survey the engine a bit, the turbo is in VG shape, almost zero shaft play.;Sweet.....I got my fuel filter light to go out - it was just a dirty connection on the sensor. There is a new alternator on it and the water pump looks like it was replaced recently. The Interstate batteries tested at 100%.:D....I put a new fan belt on it and cured the friggin' annoying chirp/squeal that it had.

Well...what part of the harness?

Here, Ford had the best deal on the external connector repair set, IH had the better deal on the gasket itself and the internal harnesses.

I'm not sure if there's a better place online, if that's what you're askin'

Which part is most prone to failure? My gaskets have 2 plugs on eack bank. The 2 outer pins furthest away from each plug are for the gp's?...No? The front plug, front pin closest to the rad had contnuity right down to the gp connector. the other 3 didn't. I guess I should hit my Ford cd for some reading on the PSD.

I think it's really a crapshoot, but the worst part of mine was the external harness, followed by the internal, and then the UVC. All of mine were damaged and melted. My passenger side was all toast, but the drivers side is perfect. Go figure.

The exterior pins on the gasket looked mint as did the bullet connectors for the GP's....I will take a second look. I work with a guy who was at IH for a few years, he know's the PSD's quite well...I'll pick his mind on the topic.

Each valve cover gasket has 2 "pass through" plugs on my 97. The exterior engine side harness connectors were mint. My troubles are inside the gasket pass through's or the harness's inside the rocker arm area.

I have found that the inner end of the valve cover gasket pass thru is what melts the most.....now the real question is weather the resistance from oil splash causes that connection to be the weak link-----:dunno

Here's a pic.....

So was it melted on the harness plug or the gasket pass through plug? which 1/2 needed to be replaced?

It took out both----it became one piece.
The gasket plug is molded into the spacer/gasket and is not serviced seperatly.

Bite the bullet and replace both the gasket/spacer and the individual harness's. You will be ahead ;Sweet

IF and I say IF you can locate a faulty GP before it's too late, there are replacement pins available....sadly complete failure and meltdown is the norm.

Plenty of dielectric grease and make sure the female end of the GP connector has good tension!....along with using quality GP's ;Sweet

I called IH this morning, $45 for each UVC GP harness (need 4) and $77 each for the VC gaskets....I'll trouble shoot it next week and get it ready for winter. I should take a look at my spare engine too and see what the harnesses and gaskets are like on that one. It's a 1997 also.

So I finally got around to testing the UVC harness's - all was well. I found a dead GP on the driver's side and another that was simply unplugged underneath the VC on the drivers side...All the plugs looked good and the continuity/resistance was in spec....;Sweet But my GP relay is going ***'s up, it used to short cycle and now that all 8 GP's work it's even worse:mad:....I'll fire on the spare relay from my PSD parts engine and go from there.

Unplugged ? at the harness or at the tip?

Either way the gods have favored you---this time :D

as far as the relay, get you one of these ;Sweet

A bit more than stock...but the last one you will buy!
