Hi Gang!
I've been shopping for a new truck, and it seems to get what I want I'm going to have to go out of state. Can anyone help me with information about obtaining a temporary tag so that I can fly in and drive out? Although we are in New York right now our state of residence is Florida and it looks like the truck will be from out west, probably Colorado or Cali.
Thanks for the help!

It can be somewhat complex........ We bought a Mercedes in Virginia and had to get an "in transit tag" from VA to drive home, which required adding the car to our existing insurance policy prior to driving. After arriving home we needed to purchase PA plates and the license agent was required to physically see the car to verify vin matched paper work from VA. Also, even though the car was purchased in VA, we had to pay PA sales tax. Last we had to have PA state inspection of the car. Likely each state handles a little different. Suggest contacting a local license agent for most accurate info for your particular situation. Oh, one final kick in the ****, about two months after the purchase we received a letter from PA dept of revenue who disputed the value of the car vs what we paid, which resulted in paying additional sales taxes to satisfy the value they established for the car......

I just spoke with the current and owner and he will let me use his plate to drive the truck back east. So that's pretty fantastic! Big load off my shoulders... Now if I only had somebody new Durango Colorado that could do a preliminary inspection for me!

Midwest & southwest seem to be favorable environments and friendly to most vehicles. Truck in sig came from Kansas and was nearly rust free (other than surface rust on frame), it's 31 years old with original floor in cab, however it did have some hail damage I was unaware of prior to having it painted. Hail damage is something I never thought of living in PA..... Also, trucks from these areas are many times used as "trucks" therefore don't get all "starry eyed" over the nice sheet metal and forget about maintenance & mechanical issues. Couple the truck purchase with a vacation to justify some of the "away time" & "travel costs" associated with the purchase. You're describing a cross country drive, potentially from Cali to NY or FL, AAA membership (if you don't already have it), may be a worthwhile investment when driving considerable distance in an unknown vehicle. Prior to starting the return trip, purchase a few emergency items, quart of oil & ATF, gallon of antifreeze, bottle of brake fluid, fuel filter (if it's an IDI), and a roll of duct tape & electrical tape. You can use all this stuff later if not required during trip.

I negotiated the use of the previous owner’s plates and insurance to drive it home. Granted it was only Maine to Connecticut, but getting a transit temporary is a real nightmare versus just using someone else’s plates. And if you’re a stand up guy, it shouldn’t be an issue. When I sold the truck, I let the new owner use my plates to drive a few towns over.

in kali, the plates go with the vehicle.
as long as you have a valid kali title on a kali purchase, your info filled on the new owner section, and a current insurance policy with the vehicle VIN number clearly printed on it, you can drive a kali plated vehicle to Timbuck3 as far as kali cares. if you remain in kali, you have 10 days to get the transfer done before penalties accrue. as far as the rest of the states, it is up to your state. but knowing how states work, I seriously doubt another state will ***** and collect reg fees for another state.
