Hi I have a 1994 ford f250 with a 7.3 IDI. i bought the truck as a project. it always started hard, seemed to be sluggish and has always smoked a little at idle. I thought it was normal for an old idi (I usually drive a 6.0 powerstoke) until I was towing my equipment trailer with a skid loader and the truck just about stalled going up hill at a slight grade. So i started messing with the timing and I advanced the pump abought an eighth inch and the smoke pretty much went away at idle and it seemed to run a little bit smoother. I then found a Snap On MT480 on marketplace, I bought it and hooked it up to the truck and it was way retarded. I began advancing the pump more and more until I couldn't advance the pump any more. The truck wont start on its own now and is currently 5 degrees retarded according to the timing meter but it sounds like its over advanced (loud diesel knock). Is there a way to verify if the tool is working properly or to verify the injection pump is working properly. Thanks for reading and for any input.
