The pipe plug has to come out. It's what fastens the back of the valley pan in place.

Get your self some Motorcraft GPs. There's one more brand that people suggest, but I can't recall it off the top of my head. You can order those via online..... they mention them all the time on the dieselstop.

Well this is what it looks like there was a nice sized piece of glowplug, and i **** it out and im gonna get a new gasket and put it back together and see what happens.

You said it was running bad, did you find any bad valves or a cracked piston?

Make sure that piston top ring is free and not pinched in. Its probably a good idea to look at the exhaust valve and seat for damage. There wont be and intake valve damage. The reason it ran so badly has to be determined before you put things back together. If the top ring is stuck in the groove maybe its time to replace just that piston and ring set. It should not be expensive. Maybe around $40.00.... Is the injecter tip ok...

Everything else is fine, its just the piston, it could have been the glowplug piece bouncing around in there

Well, hope it all works out. Some would err and just replace that piston.... drop the pan (if you can) and fix just that hole.

Im debating weather or not i should replace both gaskets and while im at it i would port and polish the intake. Is there anything special i have to do while port and polishing

Lay the intake gasket over the ports and scribe a line around the opening, open the port up to the line so that they are matched up. Do the same with the head and the exhaust side. Clean up the vlave pockets and polish everything else. Dont go too deep on your cutting.
Basicly your just smoothing out everything, these engine already have good sized ports in the head and theres not much room in the casting to make them bigger.

To reiterate * ditch the Bosch plugs!
I LOVE Bosch plugs for european applications, they last forever, but they just plain suck in these things, there was a poor application match up. if you use those Bosch plugs, you will be back in the same boat before long. Stick with the collective wisdom get the Beru/Motorcraft plugs.

Look REAL carefully for score marks on the cylinder walls and strongly consider the advice of replacing the rings on that hole.. if there's a little piece of plug stuck in the upper ring grove, that ring won't flex and you'll loose compression ( run like crap and burn oil )
