Alright so my wife drives a 2001 Jetta same car iv asked for help with before. Well I'm back at it trying to figure this thing out I get it running good fuel economy is a consistent 42 if not better at times well she calls today saying it's dieing at stoplites when she downshifts and was hard to start . Get it home hit it with the vcds/vagcom nothing comes up but a p3105 I clear the codes it barely starts and I stab the throttle and let off and it stalls . Check readings iq is high at 14.2 the timing is 3.7 btdc and my maf is 850 I bump the iq down to 6.2 all and all it runs like but idles great I feel the timing is a bit retarded and a possible air intrusion any vw gurus out there that can steer me in the right direction or is it time for a road flare in the back seat

Sorry dude, can’t help you there. But since I’m a Ford guy that road flare in the back seat sounds pretty cool! I’d almost pay to see that!

Yep, know what you mean. I know an automobile is an automobile! It’s a mechanical piece of equipment with nuts, bolts, etc.......but I’ve always been able to fix a Ford and I’m no mechanic! I’ve had two Nissans in the past 25 years and I despise them! But never own a VW.

Yeah I'm not the best mechanic either but usually a bit or research and I can figure it out and in all reality it's been an awesome little car that my wife drives the piss out of it she runs it 90 mph down the interstate 5 days a week about 150 miles round trip and just this past few months it's been acting up other than that we have had over 250k miles trouble free (knock on wood )

I'd lower IQ down to around 4. Higher the IQ, the less fuel the injection pump is putting out. Wonder why the IQ is bouncing around? Are the threads stripped in the IP?

Not that I'm aware of all the bolts are good and I had to bump the meter block back to get the iq to lower as much as I have I'll try to bump it back some more tonight when I get off but it makes sense low fuel injection would explane a lot I'll give it. Shot and report back

Alright got the iq down to 2.9 the timing is now showing 1.4 btdc and I'm getting a 1248 code and the TDI fourm is saying that's a timing issue also I noticed bubbles in the clear line in the return off the IP and to make things worse on the IP head or the quality adjuster there is a magnet and it was packed with crap I think it's time to Do the IP I hope not so if you know better please let me know also I did the head o ring due to wetness (giggidy) lol on the head

The already replaced bad seal and crud on the magnet is a bad sign for the health of the ip. Usually by the times seals are going bad, other wear components are as well. You said you found air in the return, I would make sure all the feed lines are tight and you aren’t sucking air.

I agree and I'm pretty sure that this is the original IP iv sealed the head 2 or 3 times now and after replaced the o ring I primed the system with a mighty vac on the return line till I was getting straight fuel and all the air bubbles were gone and took it for a test run and ran the hell out of it . It's a little better but not much and still has a miss/shutter at wot at 2k rpm and feels like its trying to pull but won't and after you get past about 2300 rpm its full power also coasting after a wot pull and there is no throttle response mash the pedal and it auctually feels like it slows you down for 10 to 15 seconds till it can get fuel then full power again also it smokes white raw fuel till it picks up like a lot of smoke

Lol not yet I figured it's the ip due to a some filings on the quality adjuster magnet I worked on it a bit this weekend pulling the pump for an extange but got called out and was unable to finish but I'll post the fix as soon as I get the pump and installed
