My pyro is mounted in the drivers down pipe near the oil filter. This is where ATS recommended it be installed back when they were based in UT. It was done when the larger exhaust wheel and 3" DP were installed.

Is this wrong?

I have seen 13-1400* when towing heavy in the summer and routinely see 800* on the freeway at WOT and 15 psi.

Mine is mounted IAW ATS specs and I see 1200 at WOT from 0 to 70 then I let off, 500 when cruising at 75, 7.3, E4OD, 4.10, Factory 94 turbo with out the updated exhaust, fuel screw turned 1 full turn and torque screw turned 4 1/2 turns. No intercooler (yet) Banks downpipe, 3" straightpipe, wastegate set to 8 lbs of boost.

First, if I'm reading your post correctly, I think you're talking about the crossover pipe that goes from the driver's side exhaust manifold to the Y-fitting at the passenger's side manifold that sends the exhaust up the up-pipe to the turbo. The downpipe is actually the pipe that comes out of the turbo and connects to the exhaust pipe exiting the truck...that's a significant distinction in this case.

Reason being, if your thermocouple's mounted in the downpipe, anything over 1000* is way too hot...at 13 to 1400 degrees, you'd be looking at closer to 1500 to 1600 degrees in the cylinders, which will melt your pistons FAST :shocked: The general rule of thumb is that the turbo takes about 200 degrees off the exhaust temperature...couple that with heat losses in the crossover pipe and whatnot, and it can be even more. This is why most recommend getting the thermocouple as close to the cylinders as possible, ideally either in an exhaust manifold or in the crossover pipe as close as possible to where it connects to the manifold.

Second, even if your thermocouple's in the crossover pipe, 13 to 1400 degrees is still too hot....you really don't want to run an engine over 1200 to 1250*. While these engines have oil cooler jets spraying oil on the bottoms of the pistons, aluminum still melts at 1250*...so, really, at any temp higher than that, you're playing with fire...

Thank you for the clarification, I am misrepresenting it's location. It is indeed in the drivers side crossover pipe, not the down pipe.

It has not been a sustained 13-1400* by any means, the needle makes the move and I'm off the throttle real quick! This is only when towing the Toyota's up a hard grade in Summer with the 34' gooseneck at 25-30mph. It doesn't get there fast but it always gets there!

Okay, cool...a quick spike to 1300 (or even 1400) degrees with the probe in the crossover pipe near the manifold isn't fatal...but you're doing good to take your foot out of the throttle immediately upon getting to that point. You don't want to stay there longer than a few seconds...although, with that said, you can cruise with the needle at 1000 or even 1100 all day long if need be.

I should ask, though...what's your tranny oil temp like at that point?

During normal hot weather unloaded cruising (90-100*) the Transmission likes to mimic the engine temp and it sits at 180-200*. During the winter it is 150*.

I have seen 240* for a few minutes when fully loaded and the TC unlocked, at this point the engine temp is pegged and the ENGINE TEMP light illuminates, fortunately it is just after cresting a hill and the TC locks up and everything cools down in a hurry.
I have a large plate and fin TRU-COOL cooler.

I am interested in the HyperMax Cowl Induction but do not want to increase cabin noise.

I will be adjusting the wastegate to limit boost around 11-12psi to keep my heads mated to the block and hopefully decrease EGT.

i put mine in driverside manifold, up from the bottom. easly drilled and tapped. did this before putting the turbo on so i didnt have to worry abotu shavings blowing into the turbo.

SJC97SR5 if you want the cabin a quieter place remove the seats and carpet and install two layers of Fat Mat. Its kinda like Dynamat but much cheaper.Just pull off the backing and stick it on. I did my complete crewcab and the sounds are almost gone. I did the doors too. Its a differant truck now going down the road... Darrin Tosh was the first to use it here. He has a complete picture and writeup on his site. Also about your hot exhaust... Have you replaced the down pipe that was factory on your rig... I see you have a 3 inch straight pipe but 4 inch would have been better and it fits fine. I installed a 4 inch straight pipe exhaust on my truck and it really flows nicely. Usually I can run 75 mph and see around 450 to 550 degrees. I am seeing some blck haze out the exhaust too. Don't like that much... I have been cited 3 times by a "concerned citizen" thinking I'm putting out too much smoke.... Darn treehuggers here in comifornia.....

The truck does have the upgraded 3" DP as to match the exhaust. FatMat is a great idea I will look into that, thanks!

Nope, but while snapping photos for another thread I grabbed this one. MUCH easier to reach and as close to the cylinders as possible. Note that I did try to drill from the side, but couldn't get enough room so this had to do. Mine is a Autometer Sport Comp II that I nabbed off ebay for $85.

Unloaded pulling a long 10% grade in OD nets me 800-1000*F on my pyrometer. Pretty stock N/A for now with only intake mods and an aftermarket muffler.

Cruising at 60mph nets me anywhere from 450-600*F in my area with minor hills.

Mine was there but closer to the manifold it was probably only 3" from the end of the manifold No napas around as they would have or could get an 1/8 pipe tap
