It might be sunny at the beach and the wife desires a trip.
Too bad, I suspect the new engine (175 miles) might be sucking coolant.

Other than the coolant overflow bottle dropping in level,
How would you verify that?
I did a pressure check cold and saw no external leaks.

Thanks in advance!

Who did your heads? I once had an engine doing this. The machinist had installed intake seats ( none originally) and cut the recess into the water jacket. So it burned coolant until I pulled the heads and figured it out.

First thing to check is to verify that there is no external leak. After that check the color of the oil in the engine. If it is turning a milky color then you are getting coolant in the oil. If that is also good check for white smoke while running. If you have white smoke and it smells sweet you are burning coolant. If everything seems good it could have been an air pocket in the cooling system that used the coolant in the reservoir to fill.

Heads came on long block. I had ARP studs and Felpro gaskets added to the build.
I got the truck back and after driving 20 miles, the overflow was empty. I filled it and dropping again.
Might have NOT been filled by the shop that did the work and now filled and as said, found another air pocket.
HOWEVER.
Stupid me.
I realized, after I posted this, I put Lucas Anti-Gel into both tanks and that might be the smoke I am seeing under a heavy load. Need to burn off a tank of fuel and see what it does with a load of fresh diesel.
It is what I get for having a knee replacement done and unable to do the work myself.

In my 20's me and a bunch of raucous friends took a, (middle of winter), trip to Pensacola Florida.

Ok, we might have been a bit loud, celebrating the trip along the way.

We knew we were on the right track when people kept yelling about sunny beaches...

Are you sure it wasn't just air purging the cooling system? It can empty the overflow when doing so.

Do the cold pressure check again. This time leave the pressure on the radiator. See how long it takes for the pressure to drop. I'd say that if there's no significant drop in pressure after 30 minutes, your cooling system if fine. If you do the test hot/warm, the pressure will drop a the cooling system cools off. That would give you a false pressure drop in your readings. Technically, it wouldn't be a false drop, just one for the wrong reason.
