i have a 91 single cab with a kenwood exelon 12 in kenwood box and boston 3 ways in the doors with 200 watt amp for 3 ways and jl 500 for sub

I'm old school.
My first question will be: What kind of music you like to listen to?
And then: How do you like to enjoy the kind of music you like?
If the answer to the first question is rap, then I don't have anything to say to you. Those that listen to rap don't have a brain to appreciate what music is really about.
If your answer to first question is jazz or classic (even classic rock) then I can help you. I design and build hi-fi speaker enclosures as my second job (that gives me much more money than farming)
Your answer to second question will help in putting your system together. It's not the same to enjoy your music with quality, definition and depth than to annoy everybody with loud thumps from a block away.
Here you have a couple of pics of systems I built a couple of months ago. The same principles can be adapted to work in the smaller space of your vehicle.

Very good points to ask, type, level, and what you want to hear.

Again more of the good questions that help build a better sound and usually end up solid and sometimes costing less, and using less to get more

Nice work on those boxes, reminds me of some old old school klipsh, or maybe a folded horn bin for the good old CV or JBL's I used to make for mobile DJ's.

I suspect that maybe they could/should start a audio section in OB.

Just a suggestion to Midnight, when you do your door speakers, keep some MDF for backboards and instead of mounting speaks to tin....try to custom build a backboard for behind the speaker and mount it inside the door. Adds a nice tone to the speaker compared to just a tin mount...ugh

Don't forget that 1x12= 113.04"sq. is almost 45% more area than 1x10"=78.5"sq. sub so just keep in mind how much more 1 12 sub can be for moving more air=louder cleaner bass! Just for Chit's n Giggles 1x15"=176.625"Sq um...YAY don't know if you can do 1x15 but thats more than 2x10's for example. Just some ways to think outside the boxes.....pun intended....

Looking at your avatar I think you don't have much room behind your truck seat if that's the one getting the sound system. Is it? There are usually few inches between the seat back and the rear of the cab. In my '86 truck that's how it is.
There is a little space under the seat but not too much either. Any subwoofer box needs a minimum of interior space to achieve a clean, deep bass response, at least down to 40 Hz. For a 10" subwoofer, in an acoustic suspension type of enclosure (which is easy to build and also smaller in size compared to bass reflex or horn) you are looking at least 4 cubic feet each. There is a ported type of box that you can use your woofers in a push-pull configuration and the total interior volume is pretty much the same with the advantage of reinforcement in the 40s-60s range and a sharp cut close to the resonance frequency to avoid a rattle noise. If you would like to experiment with this type of box I can send you the plans. You can have the mid range speaker mounted in your doors and the tweeters installed in the columns left and right of the windshield. What kind of crossover are you using?
In case the system is going to be installed in a different truck I would like to know how much space you have for this project.
The speaker enclosures in the pics are JBL Hartsfields and Paragon. In my humble opinion there has never been any other compared in performance and beauty. I have build several pairs of Hartsfields and few Paragons and the customers are always surprised to hear them the first time. The stereo effect in the Paragon has no equal. The depth and definition of the Hartsfield surpass even todays speakers, and we are talking of a system designed in 1959.

everything in my truck is Kicker, the mids, highs, x-overs, subs and both amps...it won't win a bass competition but going down the road at 65mph with the windows down you can still feel and hear the music clear and clean..The Kicker CVT subs are a shallow mount sub only needing 4 & 3/4 depth..

i just have a single MA dxi 10 dvc in a 1.2 cu.ft. ported down firing box in Blue. its my center console. then i actually cut the factory center console to fit around the box so it looks relatively factory. i have a 6.5 Crossfire BMF component set in the doors running off a couple power acoustic amps mounted under the rear seat. entire cab and doors are extensively sound deadened. that one ported 10 is way more effective than the 2 ported kickers i have in my 97 4runner. so my vote is along with most of the others. one proper built sub/enclosure with correct power will be very sufficient!

Burt, yes the truck in my avatar is the one it is going in. I want to use sealed boxes so that I can keep the space to a minimum, they will be 1 cubic foot inside with the speaker installed and all reinforcements in place. Boxes will be 1/2 in. MDF, as for the space behind the seat I am making the boxes 5in. wide at the top and 7in. wide at the bottom. Hence why I am looking for a shallow sub

What do you mean as a crossover?

RiotWarrior, so you're saying that the bigger the sub the cleaner the sound? Or did I understand all the numbers at the end completely wrong?

What I am thinking of doing is pulling some bucket seats from a EC, CC, or fullsize Bronco to replace my bench seat. Then where the center console used to be I could put one of my boxes there and the other (if I do 2) in the middle of the truck behind the seats

Maybe I could have some of you guys find some 10" or 12" subs that you like and have a mounting depth of less than 5.5in. I would also like to spend less than $60 a sub.
I don't really know what I am doing with this stuff but my cousin is really good at audio and has won several competetions, only problem is I don't see him that often. However, he will be helping me install/build everything
