Stupid Noob question: 7.3 extraction.

Okay guys, this is my first time doing anything that isn't a gm. I'm pulling the 7.3 from my parts truck. Pass side I pulled the bolts out of the block on the motor mount (2 of them). The driver side I took what I think are the two bolts that hold the mount together out. Exhaust is loose. Trans is gone. Starter cable off. Fuel line off. Other than a few other odds and ends hoses and wires, is there anything else I'm missing. It starts up tilts forward slightly and hangs. It seems like the motor mounts are free. Stuck pry bar in and it wiggles. A sender wire is not going to lift the entire truck. Help a dummy out here please.

I can't think of anything. I normally leave the motor mounts on the engine and pull the two nuts on each side from the bottom of the crossmember.

Lift pump supply hose and ground cables are the only thing on the front I can think of.

You by chance don't have it hooked to far back rocking the engine forward and binding the motor mounts?

Also it seems easier to pull it with the oil filter removed. They will hit the crossmember during removal.

Starter has to come out. There is a ground strap from back of driver side head to wiper motor on firewall. As mentioned, remove oil filter.

So far whats posted is what I do. Theres really no way to pull the engine unless you remove whats posted. Maybe the throttle cable and the ac hoses and maybe the fuel line to the lift pump under the alternater and vacuum pump.

You would be surprised at the tensile strength of small wires.. been there. Check what these guys said and double check everything else. Ground straps can be sneaky

I just thought of one more item. The power steering hose needs to be removed. Those 4 motor mount nuts, not the bolts are the easy way to remove the engine and install it. They slide down into a slotted stud hole in the frame side of the motor mount. You would think there is no way for those mount studs to fit but as your dropping in or taking out the engine its like magic. It just lifts up and out.

Could anyone post a pic of the motor mounts and tell me which bolts to remove? I've been through my service manual and it doesn't have a picture. I didn't remove any nuts just bolts and that concerns me. I really don't think its hung on the mounts but in the dark at 11pm last night it was hard to tell. I didn't take the starter off because it didn't look like it was going to be in the way. Taking the two bolts that mount the engine to the mount on the pass side was easier to do from the front with the core support etc out than trying to go for the others so I did. Looks like it should lift straight up off of it. On the drivers side, I removed two bolts (front and rear of the mount) that were into what looked like welded nuts of some sort. Accessed the front one through a hole in the cross member and an 18" extension. The other was a ratchet wrench. Times like this I feel like a moron. It seems so simple. Oh well, she may have won that battle, but I will win the war!!

The nuts you want to take off are under the engine crossmember and are on studs that go to the motor mounts. There are 2 on each motor mount. The starter will have to come off. It will not clear the lower crossmember. The oil filter will come off too. Just keep at it, you will get it out soon enough.

ain't that the truth! One would never guess that a small wire with a plastic connector could hold up progress lol

Well glad you have the engine out now. Your engine stand looks a lot like mine. I sure hope your is the 2000 lb stand and not the 1500 lbs stand. This is one place where bigger is always better.

Course it's also amazing how much one of these weights on those little hoists too.... takes a fair amount of force to get one out.

On the other hand, there's some benifit to doing it that way. I usually use a winch, forklift or the loader and I've certainly ripped off a few wires that way before. Oops!
