I've been having problems lately with my brake pedal losing vacuum at stoplights or when going slow through a parking lot.
I put the vacuum pump that Genlightning sent me on last night and still the same problem. I bought a vacuum tester and have 22in at idle, I also isolated the booster and vacuumed it down, it held fine and then I vacuumed the whole system down and it held fine also.
I went out tonight and bought a new check valve for the booster, still no cure.
So now what? Can my booster be bad? I replaced the booster when I bought the truck, because it would leak air when I had my foot on the brake pedal.
I have noticed however that I have alot of fluid leaking down behind the master cylinder and down the face of the booster. I'm wondering if fluid got in there and ruined something.
Can a booster just lose vacuum like that? I would think I would hear air escaping somewhere. Thanks

your booster is no good.
it can hold vac when at reast, but when you touch the pedal, all sorts of rubber stuff moves inside and any rips and tears will show up immeadiately.
i have three used units here, I have no clue which one is good/bad/ugly, but if you pay for ship, they're all yours.

Your truck is losing vacuum on the gauge as you hold the pedal? Or is the brake pedal sinking to the floor because of the master cylinder leak you have.

When I did the vacuum test, the booster didnt act up, the guauge held fine.

The pedal doesnt sink to the floor, it goes completely hard, like lack of vacuum.

Thank you towcat. I'll grab a new booster tomorrow, I also have a new master cylinder sitting in the garage that I need to throw on.

Thanks again for the offer on the boosters.

Before changing the booster change the master cylinder. The fluid leaking is an indicator of your master cylinder being bad.

I figured I would just do both at the same time. The lid on the master cyl doesnt fit super tight and I think most of the mess is from fluid seeping out of the lid.

So Autozone swapped out my old booster for another one today, I put it on and everything works great now but when I hit the pedal I get a realease of air, kinda like a blow off valve sound!::dunno
I guess as long as it works, I'll learn to live with my new air brakes.LOL

I'm guessing the lifetime warranty is working for you Kenny. You know the one that tells you that you pay once for it but the next one is free.... And so is the next... And the next.... This could get tiresome really soon. It tuff finding a quality rebuilt anything these days. I bought a rebuilt windshield washer motor. Thats plenty-o-work to install too. Well the one I installed sounded worse than the oem I removed and the new one wouldn't "park". So Nappa got it back. They didn't have another motor so I took my money and went to pick-a-parts. Got a good one there. No noises when it works and it parks just fine.... Go figure. I felt Nappa would have the good stuff... Nope... Just crap for me.... I trust nobody now....

Make sure to fix all fluid leaks first as brake fluid will dissolve just about anything on your truck. If the fluid leak is fixed and you're happy with the performance of the booster and your still getting a spongy pedal you have to go to Ford. Do search I can't remember if it was on here or the nation, but it will provide you with the part number, ford had a tech service bulletin in the mid 90's about this problem. The booster will leak vacuum and they came out with what they called an anti-leak down booster just for diesels with this problem. Good luck, hope yuu don't have to get the booster, if memory serves correct it was over $300.
