This wasn't on my idi but it's the same parts on my 1990 F150 so I figured I'd bring it up here. My starter was sounding wonky and slow lately in that truck, first three rotations it would stop between each revolution and then it would spin consistently but not fast. Battery good, grounds good, new cables, starter still original.

I get home the other day and our friend is leaving and I stall the truck by accident maneuvering around in the parking area and go to start it and the solenoid locks, I pull the e brake and leave it in neutral and smack the solenoid but not helping and its HOT. Tear the terminal off one side of the battery and save the starter.

I put a new solenoid I had that said it was motorcraft but it's an older 6.9 style where the trigger wire is in the middle and the main posts are on the sides. Are there any heavy duty better options for these things for these solenoids? They all seem to be garbage anymore. This one that failed said it was motorcraft too.. had same issue on my diesels with these things giving up for no reason not even long crank times.

It may not help, but the diesel solenoids are heavier duty than the gas engine ones. They have to hold up to more amperage for a longer time than the ones for a gas engine.
