Our diesels start by the fast spinning pistons creating heat from the rapid compression of air in the cylinders. So a slow cranking engine has little chance of making enough heat to lite off the diesel. Then glow plugs helps or ether helps. Now a slow cranking engine usually is from a bad set of batteries. The lower the voltage in the battery packs the slower the cranking is and.. The more heat thats being developed by the starter. The the starter lets out all the pent up smoke its been saving for the right moment.. Now your screwed.. If you are lucky enough to have a standard trans a drag or bump start will get you going.. An auto trans.. Wel your going to be sitting there till another starter in installed.. I hope this helps members understand why these engines start and why they sometimes wont... Its cranking speeds and heat of the compressed air in the cylinders.. Not much more either
