Are you trying to change the starter without about a foot and a half of extensions? I could see that being a large PITA. The bolts are a bit hard to get, but, with enough extensions it goes pretty easy.

Remember that my front end is different than the Twin I beam, or the TTB.

Too many extensions, and I hit the crossmember.

I meant enough extension to get clear of the starter... been a while since I did one, so, that was just an approximation.
And, no, nothing is different about the front part of the frame on your truck than a 4x4 F250 or 350, only the springs, and the axle, if you really wanted to, you could bolt a TTB setup in your truck, with it's springs... And, the F450/Super Duty springs are a bolt in 6" lift for a D60 F350...

wrong.
f450 frames are a completely different animal from f250/350's,
and so are the springs too.

Wrong? Prove it. They are different from the cab back, no argument there, but not as far as the front suspension or engine crossmember is concerned. And, I didn't day the front springs are the same, I said they are a bolt in dimension wise with 6" more arch in them. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt... It was actually F350 springs and a D60 into a 450, but the springs will swap both ways.

Prove it? no problem. At the moment, all I have are pics of the two examples, a little later, I will have data on the frames between the two. f450 frames and crossmembers are visually and measurably thicker than f250/350. the springs by your own admission is different. the bolts that hold in the f450 springs are also larger in size, so if you do put in the f450 springs, you will have to either drill out the shackles and brackets for the larger bolts or live with a ticking time bomb of sloppy spring eye and bolt combo.
you may have the t-shirt, I have to pass DOT inspections.
here's the pics now. data to back up my assertion in a little while.

What I'm getting at here is that there isn't any real dimensional difference to mounting points, or the engine crossmember itself, yes, construction material is heavier on the 450, but, as far as mounting points such as the engine mounts, and where the starter sits in relation to the engine crossmember, they are the same.
On the truck we did(a 91) we installed all new bushings when we put the front end in, and re-used the F450 mounting hardware, so, I never noticed a bolt size difference.
Still, I still consider having to drill out a bolthole a bolt in, there's no major custom fab involved, my 89 W250 needed that to have stock replacement springs installed...

The 12 point would have been so much better. They have more surface area of contact with a socket but I'm glad you are running again... The brotherhood rides to the rescue again.... And again.... Eat my shorts all you Ford dealerships.....:D

Well, it's not "running" yet. I just got back from home depot, had to go buy two new bolts for the solenoid. I stripped out the screws that were in it, and had to cut the heads off with a grinder. I got the new solenoid on, and tested it with jumper cables, and will get it put back in tomorrow morning.

From there, it's back to bleeding air out of the system. Then it will be running.
