Spark POURING out of exhaust

So my buddy drove me to his house from school so I could help with firewood, and in the woods while we were driving out in his squarebody with the 6.2 we heard a knock then it started CHOKING and sparks were POURING out of his axle dump when I got out then it died about 15 seconds later and locked up wouldn't even turn over. Obviously that is bad but WHAT HAPPENED??? I have never seen this ever before and neither has he.

Definitely odd. Maybe a injector hung open.
